Its completely true. This quote is in context where Ivey says 'I can be making a $400K bluff and just not care' which is true.

He is saying to be a pro poker player you need to completely detatch yourself from money and treat it as nothing, to a point where you can pull $100 out of your wallet and burn it not caring
I think you're all misunderstanding the real meaning.
It doesn't mean you have to be a degen that lights cigars with hundred dollar bills, or a gambler that doesn't care about dropping a few thousands on craps.

It also doesn't mean Ivey doesn't understand micro stakes playing or grinding, where $100 is a substantial part of a bankroll.

What he does mean is that you should play poker only if you can afford it. Someone with a job and a few thousand in savings can play poker online, losing $100 to him would be annoying and he probably couldn't take losing $100 multiple times. But there are plenty of threads in internet poker about people whose rent is due and who panic when withdrawals are not arriving because all of their money is on a poker site and they don't have enough at the side to pay the rent. Or stories in BBV about people pawning off stuff to go play poker/blackjack and depending on a win to get their stuff back.

Most of the angry complaints here are probably from people where Ivey's remark hits too close to home, who indeed have a $1000 bankroll on a poker site and $80 in the bank or who have lost enough money already so that the image of burning a $100 bill is too painful.

I think this is pure gold for playing poker in the right way, and I am very surprised that so many people seem to don't understand it.
I am a micro grinder and a student, I will never burn money in my life because I respect it and I respect the work beside it, but the point is that if the money you are risking at poker is important in your life to put food in your fridge or to buy gasoline for your car, probably you are doing something wrong because you just can't afford it, so that is stupid.
That is why poker is not evil at all such like wine, or beer or things like that, but it can become evil if you face it in the wrong way, IMHO.

he is saying that if you are attached emotionally to money you shouldn't be playing poker. by "burning 100 dollar bill" you are basically saying you have no emotional attachment to it

INTERVIEWER: Before we came on the show, Joe Sebok relayed a quote from you that said, "if you can't pull a thousand dollars out of your wallet right now and light it on fire you shouldn't even consider playing poker--"
IVEY: (laughing) No no no--
INTERVIEWER: You said that'd be the first line in your poker book.
IVEY: I said a hundred dollars.
INTERVIEWER: (laughing) Oh backtracking?
IVEY: I said a hundred dollars.
INTERVIEWER: That's it?
IVEY: Yeah. I mean, y'know, just to show you you have to have a certain disregard for money to be a good poker player. I mean to be a really good poker player, you can't really be worried about losing. So...
INTERVIEWER: When did you realize that in yourself? Was it sometime when you were growing up you realized you were able to just put money on the line and not care?
IVEY: Well yeah, I guess I just always had a uh...when gambling you have to know that you are gonna lose sometimes. So, I always just went with the attitude like I was always prepared to lose. Prepared for the worst.
INTERVIEWER: Right. Even with that said though I don't think of you like an action junkie, you always play to win.
IVEY: I play to win, but I'm definitely an action junkie. (laughs) You ever seen me play dice?

I could do it with no problem and never miss it - BUT WHY!!!
I guess I'm old school and money is money. I can buy a lot of groceries for a hundred bucks, or gas. If I had a few mil more, I still wouldn't burn a dollar, let alone a hundred.

But that's just me. I respect money too much for the freedom it gives you. I'd much rather give it to charity. That makes a lot more sense to me. I often wonder if any of these rich poker players give anything to charity. I would respect that a lot more than having them brag about burning money.

What Ivey means is:

You need to be able to take $100 from your wallet and burn it, if your EV of doing it is >$100.

Lighting money in fire is not to be taken seriously.
