Traded PMs with PokerStars Steve who explained that some of the players in the first round came through different channels only because there weren't very many online qualifiers yet. From this point on players for the Big Game need to qualify online first, then submit their story/video for consideration. He adds...

There are free-to-enter Big Game Round 1 satellites running four times a day from now until December 20. Finish in the top 300 and you’ll advance to Round 2.
Make it into the top 1000 in a Round 2 tournament and you’ll get a seat in the Big Game Final Round qualifier. All players that finish in the top 200 in the final will be invited to send PokerStars a casting video, telling us why you think you should be on TV’s best new cash game show. Impress us with your video and you’ll be heading off to Las Vegas to star on the show as a Loose Cannon qualifier

He needs to take boosted up on that offer and grind the free rolls in his spare time. Sounds like he could do it. Would make for a hell of a better story as well.
