Escalating penalties are given based on repeat offenses. In theory.

[QUOTE=clutch352;43648179] I think probably a full round penalty this late in tourney is probably too harsh QUOTE]

What difference does it make when in the tourney the rule (assuming in this case a rule was actually in play) is broken? So you believe the rules should be applied differently on Day 1 than Day 3?

Its a bigger penalty on day three with 22 players left.

Is that what it is called when you jump up and rush to the TD and yell in his face calling him a f****in idiot -> excessive celebration?

The Hevad Khan rule is still in place:

Quote:
46. Any participant who taunts another participant through theatrics or gestures or engages in any form of inappropriate behavior intended to disrupt other players in the tournament will be subject to penalty in accordance with Rules 39, 107
and 108.
He violated multiple rules, multiple times. He's lucky he only got one penalty.

As for him returning during the penalty, and sitting down early, where the hell was the TD? There were only 3 tables left! When a player at my table was given a penalty in a tournament, the floor hovered at the table to make sure the guy stayed away, and when the orbit had been completed, motioned the guy to come back.

This is not something that happened to Mike like a bird pooping on his head while he was walking to the casino. It was a direct result of his behavior.
It would probably never happen to Daniel.

The Matusow Formula

1) After running/playing well, get worked into a lather that this ONE TIME things will be different
2) When you lose, blame your horrible luck, the worst luck on the planet
3) When you win, tell opponent variation of "the kiddie game is down the road"
4) If opponent reacts/ignores you, get louder
5) Mix in multiple F bombs
6) Get warned
7) Ignore warnings and act like complete horse's a$$
8) Get disciplined
9) Cry and squeal at unfairness of it all
10) Issue statement blaming mental issues/medication, get people you owe money to and other useful idiots to defend you.

The reason people like Mouth/Hellmuth/Tony G act the way they do is because they have gotten away with it so often.

Mike's punishment actually is not harsh enough if he repeats this behavior. Commensurate punishment would result in an actual learning experience.

EDIT: Posted this before reading Allyn's first-hand recap. Mike should be banned from the rest of the tournament.

And it must be repeated, he has been allowed to get away with this behavior waaaaaaaaaay too long. Expecting other players who pay good money for a seat to be subjected to this cavalcade of douche is ridiculous, almost as ridiculous as saying the penalty was too harsh.

No, the original Hevad Khan rule is mostly gone, going back to the 2011 rules:

Quote:
46. Excessive celebration through extended theatrics, inappropriate behavior, or physical actions, gestures, or conduct will be subject to penalty. Any player that engages a member of the Tournament staff during the celebration or utilizes any property of Rio will be penalized in accordance with Rules No. 39, 96, and 100. Rio property includes but is not limited to chairs, Tournament tables, and stanchions.
They changed it to only be actions towards another player. If you're simply celebrating with yourself or friends then that's supposed to be okay, although rule 50 basically says that the TD can do whatever he wants.

+1. This post is spot on in every way. Absolutely agree with every conclusion. I particularly love the automatic-ness of Step 4.

Note: I have no idea if Mike has any mental issues that should be considered when applying the rules, and I don't mean to white-knight on his behalf. But when you attempt to legislate "socially unacceptable" behavior at a poker table (rooting and loudly swearing after winning a hand?), many things, including documented mental issues should be considered. It's not that hard
Dear Lord!

Acting like an obnoxious ass is not a mental illness that needs to be accommodated. I have a fear of heights but I want to be an airline pilot. I wonder if the airlines can accommodate my special condition?

Precisely the kind of thinking that gives us the likes of:

Seung-Hui Cho
Adam Lanza
Elliot Rodger
Jared Loughner
Eric Harris
Dylan Klebold

If one has a mental illness that has an impact on one's ability to conform to the rules or cope with the stresses inherent in a pursuit it is not only right to separate that person, for the protection of everyone participating, it is imperative.

You failed to mention Charles Whitman. He is the originator, the G.O.A.T., the big hitter, the number 1 stunna, nobody's better than him and he's second to none. He reached heights that are unparalleled, unequaled, unrivaled, unsurpassed. He set the bar at the highest level. His performance was first-rate outstanding impeccable unimaginable. He was El Jefe, the big boss, untouchable, irreplaceable, an inspiration to thousands with aspirations for the unachievable.
