I want to hear about his favorite vacation.

I don't get all the argument around the course. Doug runs a business. A business markets products. Pretty straightforward.

If you think the product will be bad, not worth it, unethically produced in some way, simple don't buy it. If you feel the other way, then do. The market should police itself.

Posting a review after having bought/used it I think is fair and different. But arguing about whether he should have put it out in the first place and people shouldn't buy it blah blah seems dumb.

Don't really get all the back and forth about it.

You don’t understand why consumers might want to discuss a product that’s available for purchase?

I guess my comment was a little off target. I actually don't mind some of the discussion. I guess my comment is more geared towards the people that don't really have anything to say about than saying it's a money grab/scam whatever.

I mean of course it's about trying to make money. But that's not really anything constructive other than saying you wouldn't buy it yourself which is fair.

Just to add I guess my main point was I don't get the people that just seem mad that a product was put out. That's not really a discussion.

Would be very surprising if his account is not banned by Stars already given the free preview of the Linus course, so this probably isn't going to happen.

Joey mentioned this thread in our pod last night so thought I'd check it out and I see I've been taking some heat! You'd think that my decade long career with a top reputation and leaving stars when I didn't agree with the way they were treating players would give me the benefit of the doubt that I'm not going to have come back to poker for a money grab with a terrible course but some of you guys are a tough crowd!

In fairness it's not an unreasonable assumption when you hear about someone who retired making some content and my first thoughts when Doug approached me about it were a) that I didn't want to come back to make an average course and b) that even if I came back with an amazing course, there would be people assuming I came back with an average course.

I only decided to make it because I saw a way to make a course that was at a considerably higher level than I was playing when I stopped. I'd totally agree that a course based on how I played a few years ago would not be good value for people at $1k. I spent the best part of a year working full-time doing all the theory work that I'd have been doing over the last couple of years alongside playing if I hadn't stopped though, so what I've come up with in the end is something that is imo as good (or maybe even better because I've been able to dedicate all my time to it) than what I could have produced if I was still playing and beating 25/50+.

It's obviously early days but fwiw all the feedback from people who have bought the course and started watching it has been amazing, nobody has expressed any disappointment about any part of what they've seen so far (although I'm sure it'll happen at some point, you can never please everyone). I'd recommend checking out the free content on Upswings youtube channel if you're interested in seeing the quality of the course, particularly the video on turn probing where I go through my process of video making. The feedback from serious players on those videos has been good too and it's a good indication of what the rest of the course is like.

I know most of you are prob not going to be interested in a $1k course but I used to love this thread so don't want you guys to think I've resorted to throwing out bad content to trick people to pay me money! I hope and expect that pretty much everyone who buys the course will think they got insane value after they watched it.

On the LLinus course, I do have mixed feelings about that because I've always steered clear of anything that's even vaguely grey area as to whether it's acceptable. It's important to bear in mind though that there's nothing inherently evil about studying databases, it's just site rules put in place mostly to protect recreational players from losing even more quickly. In most serious games/sports it's completely standard to take as much information as possible from other competitors games played against other people in order to prepare to play against them yourself or to learn from if you're not at that level. Any high level sports team will do video analysis of their next opponent's strengths and weaknesses before they play. It's completely standard for people to watch Tiger Woods golf swing, or Roger Federer's forehand in order to improve their own games.

In poker, because stars bans it (although completely ineffectively, probably 80-90% of my opponents when I played had mined hands on me, even though I didn't on them), it is rightly considered unfair on people who break the rules to play with HHs on people who don't break the rules. However, it's so widespread at higher stakes that the rule becomes a total joke and I have no problem at all with any of the hundreds of people who used them against me because it becomes a big ask for people to not do it when so many others are and the rule is not enforced.

In this particular case I've not even played against LLinus using the hands Upswing provided, and the course is publicly available for LLinus as well as everyone else. It is also of course not designed with the idea of making people beat LLinus as he can just adjust his play. The idea is to teach people how to exploit the games they play in by showing how LLinus has done it in the toughest games in the world.

I respect the opinion of anyone who still thinks it's not ok, because I know that for someone watching from the outside it comes from a place of wanting fairness and feeling it's harsh to LLinus. I suspect though that even the most staunch critic would probably not be so bothered if they were fully aware of the extent of mined hand usage at high stakes (I have no clue whether LLinus himself has used mined hands but given the widespread usage and the fact he's doing so well, you'd have to assign a very high probability that he does) as well as the general approach that I think most top players have to things like this. Obviously it depends what else he has going on atm but in general if I were in LLinus' shoes I would find this to be a bit of a challenge and would enjoy thinking about how to exploit people who are trying to exploit him after watching the course.

Haha probably not the best idea after just releasing all my thoughts and strategies in a course! Even without that though, although I think my theory is at a world class level after the work I've done in the last year, there's always going to be plenty of rust when you haven't played for a while and I'd no doubt end up making too many mistakes for it to be a reasonable idea to play shorthanded with the best in the world without some serious practice first.

It seems like a hands down best course out there
Where people can actually understand what the coach is saying (sorry Educa )
And you don't give a **** about holding back or not showing solver charts like everybody else that plays does and will.

And yes Stars will ban you almost certainly if they look into it
you
1) Publicly advertise that you mine hands
2) Re-sell the hands themselves and their analysis for a lot of money with active marketing on top.

FYI coaches can't even do database reviews directly anymore even though someone wants it, and have to use teamviewer, that is how much is Stars against sharing of large HH data.

But I'm sure you were prepared for that

Oh come on Alex you're just being cheeky here

I'd like you to close your eyes, relax and think of the times of your prime when you were hard to beat at the top of the ladder.

Then someone VERY competent who spends a year only on theory datamines your hands, spends ages analyzing it.

But instead of giving you action in testing it against you

He publicly releases it for everyone to see.

Are this young rascal's first thoughts really
HELL YEAH I GET TO ENJOY EXPLOITING PEOPLE THAT KNOW HOW TO EXPLOIT ME WITHOUT PLAYING ME OR PUTTING IN THE WORK IN MORE!
Oh goodie, a CHALLENGE!
