I'll support anything that's to help the game out right now and this doesn't sound too bad. It could be something the general public could latch on to we'll just have to wait and see.

The initial announcement mentioned that she's not playing, the list of players says she meets the criterias but doesn't play, and kevmath wrote in this thread that she doesn't play. What else do you need?

Pros:

Might help luck vs skill argument (politically if not logically)
Get tourneys which are wall to wall 'name' players for railbirds
Potential to put poker in a format more like other pro/elite sports, with easily recognisable criteria for 'ability' (other than simply $$$) - i.e. like playing in the Premier League, NHL, NFL or whatever, the premise is if you invited to this you are by definition 'good'.

Cons:

Potentially preaching to converted/alienation of mainstream recreational players (little chance of Moneymaker effect/Darvin Moon/Jerry Yang 'everyman' stories possible in this league, although Pro/Am tourneys are an attempt to include this)
Seems to rely entirely on sponsorship/TV rights to be financially viable (great if they can get this consistently)
Needs the big names to play in it and take it seriously to have any credibility/draw advertising revenue, especially in the early stages

Does anyone else read this as an attempt at some kind of quasi-unionisation of pro poker players into their own league where they get to play for a share of the TV money? Rather than playing in Tours and tourneys that other people own, take rake from, take the TV and beef jerky sponsorship money etc. Reading their "beliefs" I get that vibe off it.

Congrats to Curt Kohlberg for his 2nd place finish at Seminole Hard Rock WPT which should get him a 2 Year B card.

I love that qualifying is based on results, and not a popularity contest like some of the TV invitationals.

Excited to be participating.

Fafax - all your concerns for Doyle are unwarranted...

Doyle Brunson is one of 7 players who will be granted a lifetime exemption. Somehow Men the Master was one of the 7 which seemed interesting. Here is the link, the 7 are Doyle, Men, Seidel, both Phil's, Daniel and Johnny effing Chan. Rest easy, Doyle will be there. The story also points out a few interesting side notes including TV time on CBS, possibly.

According to the criteria, Doyle shouldn't have a membership at all.

Did you read the criteria? He has 10 cashes since 2008 for over $400000.

•2-Year Card Category A: At least $2 million in adjusted lifetime earnings, with the single largest win capped at $1 million; at least one major title; at least six cashes since January 1, 2008, for a total of at least $300,000 won

•2-Year Card Category B: At least $1.25 million in adjusted lifetime earnings, with the single largest win capped at $750,000; at least nine cashes since January 1, 2008, for a total of $600,000 won

I think you're right, my mistake was thinking "at least one major title" not career-wise, but from Jan 1st, '08.

To save me the unbearable hassle of clicking around, can someone tell me how they calculate "adjusted lifetime earnings?"

Was wondering the same thing, maybe they use something like THIS

Doyle's 1976 $220000 win would be $833063.28 now.

"Adjusted lifetime earnings are the sum of all cashes in qualifying tournaments. A player’s single largest win in a qualifying tournament may be capped if it exceeds the threshold for the player’s applicable card level."

Oh so it has nothing to do with buyins or actual money won huh? (I have a shot!) Thanks.

Also, have they announced a cutoff for qualifying or rules for that? Are they going to expand the league as more players qualify?
