Q&A ON COVID-19

How should I greet someone?
"Hello, [name of person]."

Do I need to do social distancing with my spouse in our own home?
While probably not necessary, it is still good practice for what comes later in marriage.

How much food should I buy in advance?
All the food you are going to eat should be bought in advance.

Should I wear a mask?
You should have been since the day you were born.

What do I do to keep myself entertained while in isolation?
Repost anything you find on Facebook that is fake info and then defend it. Or correct anyone who says anything wrong in their posts. (I particularly enjoy that one.)

Can I safely participate in an orgy?
Depends on size. If you can participate while maintaining six feet distance from everyone, then have at it.

Should I buy stocks while the prices are down?
No, buy them at their peak like you did last time.

Is this all just a "deep state" conspiracy to put everyone in their control?
No, it's all just a figment of your imagination. Please take the vaccination.

What's the best way to disinfect my home?
Leave.

So why is it again that it's either 1 week or 13+ weeks? What's wrong with anything in between? I seem to remember that Bobo asked this question before - forgive me if my recollection is wrong or if I missed your reply to him.

Generally speaking I believe hoarding is selfish and wrong. My family and friends in the Netherlands told me that this has been going on there for more than a week now. The result is empty shelves and less fortunate people going to the store only to find that the products they needed are sold out. Someone told me that one guy actually tried to buy 16 kilos of sugar. The supermarket didn't allow it.

If the majority of people would actually stock up for three months or more, I imagine this would have an even more disruptive effect. Moreover, allow me to remind you that not everyone owns a car and not everyone has the financial means to spend that much on groceries all at once.

Because 12 weeks is a figure the government have given us in the UK for self isolation for over 70s and those with underlying health conditions and the government's estimate of when we might be over the hump.

It sounds like you, Boba and ArtMcFly are all in the same country, Canada maybe?, where you are a week or slightly more behind the part of the cycle that we in the UK here are at. I have spoken to about 20 close friends and family and all of them are stocking up with supplies, some have done it for 1 or 2 months, some for 3. They are a wide cross section of people politically, economically and age wise. I don't own a car and I am not rich, I've been doing a lot of heavy lifting and carrying of shopping bags. I spent about £300 in total and 90% of the spend was on bland, awful food such as 50 pence sachets of pasta with a chemical compound flavour sachet included, dried apricots, mixed nuts and tins of baked beans and mushy peas.

The person who tried to buy 16 kgs of sugar deserves to die of either Diabetes or the Coronavirus.

I think some of you are incorrectly assuming that I am advocating hoovering up everything possible off the shelves, I am not. I am only saying it's reasonable to buy 3 month's worth of survival food and other essential supplies. And from tomorrow, because I was very undisciplined with my food consumption yesterday and today thus far, I will be rationing the food in my household so that "3 months worth" lasts between 6 and 9 months, and I include in this using less squirt of toothpaste and less volume of shampoo on my hair. Both of those things and many, many others are already scarce in the shops.

You are right, this could well be because some people bought 25 bottles of shampoo. I bought 3 which is about 3 months supply, which I am going to turn into 6 to 9 months supply.

So it is about degree, buying enough to survive I think is okay, buying as much as you can possibly buy or afford is clearly not.

This appears to be the common belief, but I haven't actually been able to find any evidence its true. If you can provide a news story or some other link which documents this I would definitely be interested in seeing it, and would certainly be more inclined to believe it.

We know that S. Korea really ramped-up its testing with the advent of these "drive-through" testing facilitates, which may indeed be a model for the rest of the world. But this didn't occur till 2/26/20, or more than 5 weeks after the first reported case in S. Korea. And by that time, there had already been some 2000+ confirmed cases in S. Korea.

Thanks for clearing that up. I still disagree with the idea of stocking up that much, but it does sound a bit more reasonable now.

I think Bobo (not Boba ), Arty (not Art ) and me all live in different countries. I live in Poland, where schools, pubs and restaurants have been closed for over a week now. So given the relatively low number of confirmed cases (currently 563) the government responded quite early to the threat of the virus when compared to most other European countries. Last week the supermarkets were a bit crazy around here, but thankfully I haven't seen many empty shelves myself.

Yes so your outlook and other people's is likely influenced by the current level of worry in your own particular country.

Here in the UK it is a very fast developing situation. For example just 10 minutes ago Timpson who are cobblers (shoe repairers), key cutters/copiers and suppliers of shoe polish (not Polish, lol) and shoe laces, have just announced that they are closing all 2155 of their UK shops.

There are some independent cobblers/key cutters still open, but Timpson's is a national institution of cobblers here since the year 1865 and is on most high streets and/or inside major train stations and shopping malls.

We're not talking food here of course, but it will now be difficult to get shoe laces or polish, the former might cause a problem for some parents as kids do wear them out very quickly.

These closures are part of an overall pattern and are very likely the shape of things to come in the UK.

Życzę wam i waszym bliskim pełnego bezpieczeństwa i dobrego zdrowia w tych trudnych czasach.

I think there will be less live 1-2 and 1-3 "grinders" when this is all over or they will be short staking like mad. If they can't find a way to get unemployment I feel very badly for them...

Unfortunately, I think there may be fewer Old Man Coffees generally.

(I am >65, the appropriate age to make that comment.)

Sounds like all humans will be exposed to this virus over the next 12 months unless you isolate with no human or animal contact. Scientists also don't know how long the virus lives in the air.

Gravity may influence that, ya think ?

What do you mean "how long the virus lives in the air" ? Time or distance ?

I don't know .... maybe 6 feet, based on the average airspeed of an African Swallow ?

I don't think this makes that much of a difference to me personally, to be honest. The situation in the Netherlands doesn't look good either: the country is only one spot behind the UK in terms of the number of confirmed cases. The measures that have been taken so far must have created panic among many, as supermarkets have been struggling to keep up with the high demand.

However, the peeps (hi Gzesh ) I've spoken to (I'm Dutch myself) all refuse to follow suit. They didn't stock up excessively, and I wouldn't either. If the **** hits the fan somehow then we're all screwed together - that's how I feel about it. No hard feelings though, I understand your viewpoint.

It looks correct grammatically, but I think the bolded part should be ci i twoim in this case ('wy', 'wasz' and their derived forms refer to the plural 'you' - Google Translate lost a coinflip there ). But thank you and the same to you!

Anywho, back to the virus. Recently I noticed the slow increase in the number of confirmed cases in Denmark. They reintroduced border controls with Germany (which is their only land border) about a week ago. This is their confirmed cases graph:

Notice the change around 13-14 March. Admittedly this was just before the border control thing took place, although Denmark announced it on the 13th. Morph's hair, do you have any inside information?

Are you guys for real??

I wasn't bashing Italy, ok I wrote it in a humourish way.
But the point wasn't bashing Italy. I love italy. I think it's one of my fav countries. Been there a lot. Have some Italian friends.

The point is what can be learned from the mistakes Italy made. And to show you what it's like in Italy nowadays.
03-22-2020 , 04:23 PM

Just to show you I wasn't bashing anything.

The point was what went wrong and what can Europe the USA and Canada and all others countries learn from Italy.
03-22-2020 , 04:50 PM
People were saying oh Italians numbers are higher than China's they must be off!
No they are not. I researched what Italy did wrong andy they did a lot of stuff not right. You misunderstood my intention to explain why Italy's numbers are correct. Or I done it stupidy, apologies then

Yes, you can't use those numbers for anything. Yes, we closed our borders at that time, but we also changed the way we test people. Now we only test people with severe symptoms and who are in the risk group. If you look at the numbers for people in intensive care beacuse of the virus, that number has gone up drastically the last few days. We went from 0 deaths to 17 in 3 days. The situation in Denmark is pretty bad, and seems out of control. Everything besides grocery stores/pharmacies is closed.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has tried to allay fears that the central government is unable to contain the virus, after he was forced to admit that a hospital in the northern town of Codogno had mishandled the region's first coronavirus case and had contributed to the deadly virus' spread
