So instead of buying a new computer, I decided to start and try to build an SSD into my old tower or laptop, prob gonna try both and see which "runs better". Saw Samsung has cheepish SSD's, anyone with experience on the SSD 840 Basic? What is important when looking at SSD's?

Samsung 840 series is great. What to look for? Hard to say because even bad SSDs are amazing.

Rowniwn, if you are buying a laptop I would advise you to look here:

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptop-computers/

I configured the "15.62 ultranote" one with i7, SSD, 16GB RAM, HD4000 graphics and 1920x1080 screen for < £700.

Solid, light weight and looks good.

Total noob here: I have a Asus Notebook U80V with Intel Core Duo CPU and 4 GB RAM. If I hook this up to a monitor using a VGA cable, will the output be at the laptops resolution or the monitors? Will doing this slow down my laptop? I really only need this for poker and possibly watching some movies.

Is this monitor any good?

http://www.amazon.com/HP-W2371d-23-I...pr_product_top

Any idea how many WPN tables I could tile on this thing?

+1. Just got mine (spent ~£1200 with extended warranty) and it's the greatest laptop I've ever owned. Sick machines and incredible service/support. Give me a shout on Skype/FB if you wanna go through it Marc.

sooo after hours of searching the right .iso file (don't have windows cd anymore) and make my usb stick bootable the desktop finally worked. I wanted to add some more RAM that were lying around (was stupid enough to do that when computer was running..) and now I suddenly don't have a video signal anymore / can't connet screen to computer. tried few things that were suggested trough google, didn't work tho. any idea how I get it back running?

thx

nvm, managed to put SSD into laptop weeee

Thoughts:

OR:

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-30-inch-...6114548&sr=1-6

Currently I have 2 27'' Samsung, and my PC specs are:

I run 2 Asus GEFORCE GTX 650 graphic cards, and a Crucial M500 960GB SSD. Still using Windows 7.

Never used 30'' monitors before, will it make a big difference? I play US sites, 12 to 18 tables.

Thanks

PS: I'm also thinking about updating my processor and get a newer version. Is that necessary or the one I have still does the job? If update, which one do I get?

Your processor probably never comes close to getting maxed out. You can check this in task manager.

Never used a 27, so can't really say if it is worth being upgraded.

Hello guys,
I'm an italian guy and now I'm studying english in a school in Dublin.
Now i've just come back to italy for Christmas Holiday and I'm looking for a new laptop to grind because when I was in Dublin, i had a lot of problems to manage 6-8 tables of pokers, use hem2, comunicate with skype etc...
My Laptop now is the Asus Lamborghini VX6, but it's not enough for my use.
I was looking for the site http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptop-computers/ that a guy of the forum advices to us...but I'm not able to configure the charateristics..
Can anybody help me?
My budget is between 500-700 Euro...I prefere a screen about 14"inch and a good portability, because I'm planning to travel a lot!
What is your advice?
Thanks you very much,

Lorenzo

yeah this lol. any reason to think you need a cpu upgrade other than its slightly old? should be sufficient for poker for 10 years or so..

monitor wise, kinda the same. if you aren't missing out the higher resolution theres really no need other than tmms =)

obv without tiling, but not too hard to manage 12-15 tables on a 15" laptop personally

Bought a laptop recently that I was sure came with an SSD which I heard was great for grinding, having read up a bit more I'm now not 100% that I have SSD in this laptop...

Specs are below... from that can anyone tell me whether or not I do have an SSD in this laptop or is the 32gb SSD bit just mean it has capability to use an SSD ?

If the latter can anyone recommend me a good SSD

Processor 2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM
Memory 8GB, 1,600MHz DDR3
Hard drive 1.0TB 5,400rpm / 32GB SSD
Chipset Intel HM77
Graphics Nvidia GeForce GT 650M / Intel HD 4000
Operating system Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Dimensions (WD) 16.4x10.9 inches
Height 1.3 - 1.5 inches
Screen size (diagonal) 17.3 inches

Sounds like you have HDD like this http://www.seagate.com/internal-hard...-hybrid-drive/

I don't know anything about them but they aren't SSDs. It looks like a regular slow ass hard drive that is using a small SSD as an inflated cache. I don't have any first hand experience with these new drives but they aren't SSDs.

They very well could be really fast though, so it's not all bad.

Dedicated hybrid SSD's usually don't have more than 8GB flash memory. I bet it's a mSATA (mini PCIe) SSD, paired with a standard 1TB HDD.

You could just look up in your device manager what (or which one) it is.

my laptop has one and afaik its just for the OS

works really well for that but im not sure how much more you can do with it.

mine is 7200rpm tho, not an ssd, but have never felt it was slow enough to consider adding one. altho i do think theres a fairly significant drop to 5400rpm

I don't understand much (if anything at all) about computers, just thought a 3 years old processor had earn retirement.

About the monitors, I read and hear about people loving their 30'' ones and wonder if life's much better. Is not a necessity, but if it makes your time in the computer more enjoyable, I'll do it.

IF I end up switching monitors, are my graphic cards good enough?

yeah you should be fine. sounds like a pretty absurd computer (altho sli video cards <<< 1 much better one) if you dont get into video editing and stick with poker, that will prob honestly be all you need until it breaks down (a looooong time)

Thanks man, would I notice much of a difference if I were to install say a 120gb ssd ?

Also how easy is it to install a new SSD into a laptop ?

would you notice it - yes. only you know if its worth it tho.

not sure if you'd need to reformat or not, but if youve been using the comp for a bit its more of a pita than if you got it new and put it in

If the SSD is a dedicated drive just for the OS, a bigger SSD will probably not make the OS faster, but it's a really huge difference for the database. To get a rough idea, my old PC had a 7200rpm HDD, and I had about 1m hands in my db. Applying a filter for all hands would sometimes take up to ~1min. Now with my Agility3 connected to SATA2 and a 2.7m hands db, the same process takes about 10-15sec, and that's approx 1/2-2/3 the performance of a Samsung Evo @ SATA3.

The new PC is 64bit with >2x as much RAM which also factors in though, nonetheless the database will benefit from an SSD. If you're however fine with your current db performance (ie. HUD doesn't cause lags, and time for applying filters is bearable), you might want to think twice if you want to invest the money and time.

You will obv have to reinstall everything if you replace your main drive so while the physical replacement is as easy as can get, there's still a bit of a hassle involved to get the system up and running. Also you prob have to change some BIOS settings prior to installing your OS (AHCI mode -> google "install OS on new SSD").

If you don't have a slot for a secondary drive, you could buy an external USB case for like $10 to for your old HDD, which not only makes backing up/migrating files (and progs that don't require proper installation) easier but also allows you to keep the HDD as a storage device while leaving your files (eg. music, videos, pics, HMArchive) untouched.
