thoughts on the Samsung Series9 (the hi end $1700 one) as a backup laptop ?

Ive only owned 17" laptops so its weird as it gets as I hate grinding on laptops at live stops but ... that thing looks awesome and is super light (highly important for me)

on the other side, they have a nice 17" packed up (but no SSD - although can be added) for 1400$

Your whole drive can be cloned as long as the SSD is big enough. This is something you should contact a local specialist for.

^^ TY. I think i'll have to do a serious cull to clone my whole drive onto a reasonably priced SSD.

256gb is probably enough. I have my whole system running off a drive this size and 120GB is video games and media. My Postgres database for the year is 9GB.

Transfer your games and media to the second hard drive (or just redownload them...) and you should be able to get under 200gb no problems. Download Treesize free and you can easily find what is using up all your storage to help you decide what should be on the 2nd drive.

Things you'll want on your SSD: Windows, Programs like firefox/chrome; Skype; Pokerstars; etc., Postgres, HM2/PT4.
Things that don't need an SSD: Music, TV/Movies, and most games.

Doggz. How many hands does 30GB hold approx for a DB? I don't think with progs + DB i'd need more than 80Gbs would i?

I'm pretty sure there is a difference between pt3/pt4/hm1/hm2 as far as data size per HH. I don't know the numbers, sorry.

I have/had 80gb SSD on my home desktop and I wouldn't recommend it. You might be able to get away with it but who knows how much space you might need a year or two from now. 120gb is the min drive size I'd buy today.

Wow I'm a computer dolt... and google is just confusing me. Can anyone offer advice on which one of these SSDs to go for? (I think my motherboard only supports SATA 2, so is it worth just going for a cheapy? Prices are $AU)

Intel SSD-330 SATA3 120gb - $95
Intel SSD-520 SATA3 120gb - $139
Kingston SVP200S3 120gb/240gb - $85/$169
Kingston HyperX 120gb - $99
OCZ Vertex Plus SATA2 120gb - $75
OCZ Agility3 SATA3 128/256gb - $94/$174
OCZ Agility4 SATA3 128/256gb - $105/$214
SanDisk SSD Extreme 120/240gb - $99/$179
Samsung 830 Series SATA3 128gb - $99

TY.

Without looking at the pricing, and assuming little has changed in this regard in the year since i looked into it, you should opt for an intel if youre an online poker player as reliability trumps the relatively minor performance gains from using a faster ssd, and sata 2 is your bottleneck anyway.

Things have changed. Not that intels are bad, but Samsung is the industry leader in SSD (imo) right now. The Samsung 830 series has gotten rave reviews for both speed and reliability. I bet if you check newegg.com for this SSD it has very high reviews.

I'd go with:

Samsung 830 Series SATA3 128gb - $99

Computer newb here. I've just tried to connect a 3rd monitor to my desktop computer. Video card is a NVIDIA Geforce 8200, and has 1 VGA, 1 DVI and one HDMI port. Is there a reason I cannot use all 3? Is it normal that a video card with all 3 ports would not support a 3rd monitor?

If it can't support a 3rd monitor, what would be the best option to do so? New video card completely? Thanks!

Looking at laptops for past few weeks for grinding and cant quite seem to get what I want.

Saw this Sony Vaio for £899.99 http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/sony-v....html#longDesc but no SSD drive. Would I be able to have an SSD drive alongside the 1TB drive thats already there?

I want to be able to run multiple poker sites, hem & maybe another couple of programmes on the side (firefox, outlook express). Will often mass table too so im guessing that is why i need an SSD.

Thoughts or recommendations?

It likely wont fit inside, but you can have an external obviously. I have a 200gb SSD inside and the 500GB which came with the laptop as external

Hmmm. Im guessing by the time ive paid for the SSD and have it fitted, id be just as well paying a bit extra for a macbook pro. I'll keep looking.

I'm re-evaluating the mouse + TN keybinds setup I've been using for ages. Has anyone got any good suggestions for alternatives. Maybe a separate keypad?

i know i can search but it's quite tedious...if anyone has any backup laptop recommendations, I'm looking to pick up a decent but cheap (under 1k) laptop. It's basically as a backup (although I will be using it primarily for a couple months) and to browse internet / play music/video. maybe starcraft 2 but that seems unlikely, so yeah, something to play 12 tables of poker on and run a HUD. internet and music in background. HDMI port. the convenient simple stuff.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for any advice.

I recommend waiting until after thanksgiving and pick up a Black Friday deal. You should be able to find a $1k laptop for $700-$800. The laptop I got last year for $800 still retails for more than $800 today with all the bonus addons I got.

I'll post some laptop deals when they start getting released.

i'm sure this has been asked many times before in this thread but i did a quick search and didnt find anything that fit what i was looking for....

anyways i'm wondering if anyone can recommend me a good laptop/notebook/whatever for a good price, preferably under $400usd or so(if thats possible...)?
it doesnt need to be some top of the line model or anything special....

i'd only be using it for the normal things like browsing the internet, listening to music/watching videos online, maybe writing papers/doing homework when i return to school, and of course id need it handle playing poker online.

for the poker, it would need to be able to access the internet via both Wi-Fi and through alternative backup methods like 3G/4G or aircards(what is best for poker?).
It would need to easily handle playing upwards of 9-12 tables on as many as 2-3 sites at a time and possibly run a HUD like HEM/PT etc...
It would also need to support anti-virus software/basic security features or have it already installed.

Edit:
Oh i forgot to mention that I'd consider going Used if that would mean a better computer as long as its worth it.

at $400 you aren't going to get a good screen resolution and that will make playing 12 tables on 3 sites basically impossible without a secondary monitor.

thanks for response!
im not a mass multi-tabler....i play MTT poker and im usually playing somewhere between 1-6 tables but during early parts of sessions(like on sundays), i'll sometimes have upwards of 9-12 tables going. sometimes i grind 2 sites at a time but again, my table numbers don't increase.

ive been borrowing a family members old laptop right now and because of the small screen, I am usually limited to 9 tables before it becomes hard to see my cards/font/etc...

thanks for the warning i should have clarified that I'm not too concerned about it being able to run a ton of tables....basically I'm needing a nice cheap laptop for all the normal uses that will suffice for occasional grinding sessions. i would prefer if it could handle all the things i listed a few posts back.

thanks again man...

is this a good monitor for multi-tabling, say 12-tabling? it's a lot less expensive than dell monitors and the size is decent. but the resolution is kinda low, so I am not sure if it is just like a TV or something and not suitable for poker.
