p.s. i still don't have a clear opinion on the subject.
Um some random conspiracy theorist making a bunch of completely wrong and unsubstantiated assertions. What exactly is interesting there?

This is all I read of your post, and I never venture into the politics forum. You claim you get wrapped up in arguments for hours everytime you go into the politics forum, but when you start off by saying something like this, what do you expect to happen? fwiw I'm not conservative/libertarian in the slightest, just poking fun at you.

^^ Think Jurrass posted this a couple months ago in this monthly thread, sick vid.

One single volcanic eruption the size of Mt. St. Helens or greater will put more CO2 and pollutants into our atmosphere than we humans could produce collectively in 200 years.

The earth itself is the problem, not it's inhabitants. We are just riders on this bus, we don't drive it.

Just sayin.........

Yes, a lot of people call an asteroid a meteor. But it really has more to do with if they actually hit the earth or not or if they came from the asteroid belt, etc.

Meteors

A meteor is just a streak of light in the sky.

I've already done the global warming thing 100x. We've been round and round in this thread.

The anarcho-capitalist thing is fairly new but I'm done with that now too. Another group that will never be convinced no matter how convincingly you box them into a corner.

This is just flat out wrong. I think people are mixing up CO2 with sulfur dioxide, which actually cools the atmosphere because it blocks out the sun. Volcanoes are a major source of sulfur dioxide.

Quote:
Compared to man-made sources, though, volcanoes' contribution to climate change is minuscule, Gerlach said.

Mount St. Helens produces between 500 and 1,000 tons a day of carbon dioxide, he estimates.

Nothstein, of the state energy office, says the Centralia coal plant puts out about 28,000 tons a day. Statewide, automobiles, industries, and residential and business heating systems emit nearly 10 times that amount.

On a global scale, the difference is even more dramatic, said Gerlach, who often gets calls from power-plant operators and oil-company executives who believe nature is just as responsible for global warming as man. His answer always disappoints them.

"I tell them the amounts don't even come close and I usually never hear from them again."

Worldwide, people and their activities pump 26 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, he said. The total from volcanoes is about 200 million tons a year — or less than 1 percent of the man-made emissions.

Yes there have been gigantic climate changes in history through stuff like the Siberian traps, which was a gigantic region of super-volcanoes that basically never stopped erupting for millions of years. Those wiped out 90% of all species 250 million years ago at the end of the Permian. But most volcanoes only cause blips of a few years, and usually cool down the climate as Krakatoa and Pinatubo did. Mt. St. Helens wasn't even that big.

Some good reading on the traps and recent volcanoes:

(Now, this is the kind of facts-ownage that you think might actually sway someone to look more into the real facts rather than just rely on stuff their uncle or coworker told them. But no one ever seems to. Maybe the lurkers do, I dunno. You can spend days looking up the facts and refuting almost everything, and seemingly not even make a tiny dent in anyone's *politcal* opinion on what should be just a*scientific* argument imo. It gets really discouraging. )

(No offense Slacker, still love you, but I think you had this one wrong.)

So I'm graduating from my Equal Opportunity Advisor course tomorrow, and we had a 30 minute guided discussion that we each had to lead today. One of the students (a black girl) had to do her discussion on the history of white people, showed a brief slide show, and on her last slide she had "Happy White Appreciation Day.....every day except for all of February."

Needless to say, she was very close to not joining us for graduation.

i don't get it... maybe it's because my english sucks? what's the thing with february? :|
