Wrestling Draft 2014 Wrestling Draft 2014

I'm taking old school Sting who comes down from the rafters with a baseball bat.

So many moments where he literally rips the mat apart and emerges from underneath to attack the NWO.

With the 10th selection...

Spoiler:

...The Underrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtaker!

There probably aren't enough accolades I can give him in this short space, but I will try anyway. In the infamous "wrestlers have other jobs" era where hokey, cartoonish gimmicks came and went by the wayside, there was only one that stood the test of time. At a time where wrestling routinely breaks the 4th wall and the mystery of "is it real?" has been solved and ridiculed for decades, there's only one guy left who still carries the same aura and mystique that people associated with him the first time they saw him as a child when they still believed it was real. At a time in wrestling where WWE has trained their audience that wins and losses don't matter and usually a series of matches are always booked "even steven", one guy is still so big that just the idea of trying to beat him 1-2-3 far supersedes any title. What more can you say about The Undertaker? The man is simply the greatest gimmick of all time.

Yeah Taker was next on my draft board after Cena went. Nice value at 10. Lots of longevity, the ability to stick him in the main event immediately and have that last for 20 years, great as both face and heel, etc. I took him 6th overall last time we did this so I guess no surprise that I still feel that way today.

Taker is also one of the ones that I think has a bit of name recognition beyond wrestling fans (which I was calling a point of difference from HBK), although I think that's more an effect of...lots of people have dabbled in watching at least a little bit of wrestling at some point in the past 25 years, and Taker was a prime player at almost all times during that. And if you've watched him at all, he's one of the ones you don't forget.

Yeah if you were going to skip that whole first part of Sting's career he's a decent bit less valuable. He did a lot of great work before the nWo existed.

K fair enough.

If my guy is there for your 2nd pick, the offer stands.

Yeah you don't usually get too far out of line with your picks.

I think there's a clear guy for the next pick, then after that there's a bunch of people who are really close.

Crow Sting is my favorite Sting too, but you're missing so much if you skip over all his really early stuff. That's where he had the best matches of his career, and it also makes his turn to Crow Sting not mean as much if he didn't have a decade of being a super babyface before it.

i'm not crazy about the undertaker in the first round of these drafts because it's just so hard envisioning him as the face of the company. he has enormous value as a #2/#3 guy (as we've seen over the last 20 years) but i think that's where he tops out.

obviously, it's hard to get a "face of the company" guy after flair, hogan, austin, rock, cena and i guess michaels are off the board, but there are a few guys available that i think fit the bill (or could believably succeed in such a situation).

Yeah I drafted Taker in the first round of one of these drafts and it was really hard to build around him. I paired him up with Sting but even that was really hard to have a company with those as the top 2 guys.
