Wrestling Draft 2014 Wrestling Draft 2014

Vince vs. Austin seems to have set the paradigm for wrestling shows for almost two decades now. They generally are run on some sort of authority figure vs. wrestler narrative a good percentage of the time when this had been out of fashion for around a decade and not frequently used even prior to that. For a quarter of a century Vince played the same character on TV with little or no indication that anything remotely resembling "Mr. McMahon" would exist. I'm curious about everyone's opinion on Vince as an announcer.

Vince the announcer was basically the Michael Cole of the 80s and 90s.

Never really cared much for him as an announcer. It's good for the pick though that he can throw him in the booth a bit.

Vince the announcer was better than Cole. Limited in wrestling knowledge but sold big moments better.

Except entertaining and with a tolerable voice.

Hulkamania era Vince was tolerable when with Ventura. Babyface Vince in the New Generation era was completely awful (whatamaneuver-he-got-him-no-he-didn't!).

I'll take Scott Hall and Kevin Nash.

Two very versatile wrestlers in terms of being mid-card/secondary wrestlers, main eventers, and a dominant tag team as well. I think getting them together (with Hogan nonetheless) adds even more than the sum of the parts.

Roster:
Hulk Hogan
Vader
Scott Hall
Kevin Nash

The core of the NWO...I'm impressed.

For a guy whose presentation/entrance is the most vital part of his gimmick, major anticlimactic fail for not posting Goldberg's theme song.

Another interesting PW Torch quote from that "who would you start a franchise with" issue from 2002 about Goldberg (Goldberg was placed broadly in the 11-20 range along with Austin who was still MIA, but was followed by this writeup):

"Bill Goldberg deserves a high spot because even four matches with him is worth more to a promoter’s bottom line than 200 matches from some others on this list [note: most of whom have been drafted except 1 undrafted sucka]. Dealing with his inflated self–perception, lack of “need” for money, willingness to walk away from a deal if it doesn’t suit him, and his limited ring and mic skills makes him far from the total package, but the perception and name value he has makes up for a lot of those faults."

Goldberg is a really good fit for a roster with Flair and Rhodes because his longevity is far less important. I almost picked him at the end of the second.

Goldberg is a legit threat to seriously injure anybody who has the misfortune of being in a ring with him, including himself. He ruined angles hurting himself and injured at least two of the first rounders in this draft.

Getting all 3 original members of the NWO is huge. The key now is getting someone to play that Sting in 97 or Goldberg in 98 role to take on the NWO after Hogan eventually turns heel.

That's a downside I hadn't considered.

Speaking of legit threats to do something misfortunate to someone during a show...

Spoiler:

The Kevin Nash pick may not have been as dangerous, but what he lacks in danger he makes up for in the ability to give a single f0ck about his job...

Spoiler:

(granted I think he's hilarious in this)

I miss WCW...when's the next episode of Impact coming on?

Man I really wish I'd drafted Buddy Rogers instead of Orton. I think I might like my roster the least so far.

Getting Hogan, Nash and Hall is pretty awesome, really liking that roster so far.

Round 4 pick:

Owen Hart

One of the most underutilized performers of all time IMO. His ceiling was as high as his brother's. Very happy he fell to this spot.

Round 3: Goldberg

Similar value to Lesnar, huge peak.

On phone. I take Jeff Harvey

Does Harvey work as a #2 face in an attitude era setting? Really hard to believe he would. His promos combine the unintelligableness of hulk hogan with the enthusiasm of a dead person. Him being a believable antihero seems unlikely

But the young people love him for some reason, and at his peak he was over at a completely unjustifiable level

Who is this Jeff Harvey you speak of? Is he related to the great Steve Harvey?

I once again go to the well for an old-timer just because I think he's a great fit with who I currently have.

Spoiler:

Having a feminine arrogant heel as primary foil to face Rock and face Funk are both feuds that write themselves, and Gorgeous George was an absolute heat magnet in his own right.

Roster:
The Rock
Terry Funk
Buddy Rogers
Gorgeous George

He definitely had a big peak... but this peak lasted all of 6 months.
