Andre The Giant

With a career spanning almost 30 years, Andre is one of the biggest names in wrestling history and gives me someone who can be slotted into the main event at pretty much any point in my company's run. Despite being almost immobile during the late 80s, he was very agile for a big man for most of his career. As well as being the second greatest big man of all time, he is also widely known outside of wrestling - before my girlfriend started watching wrestling I asked her which wrestlers she had heard of and the only three were Hogan, Rock and Andre.

After the first few picks I think pretty much anyone is replaceable but there's only one Andre The Giant. I'll probably get slated for this but personally I'd rather have him than Bruno. Yeah sure Bruno drew great in New York in the 70s, but how well would he do worldwide as the top guy in a company with Hogan and Austin on other channels? (This is part of the reason why I decided to pick a great worker in round 1 btw). From what I can gather he was basically a smaller, less charismatic Hogan (with probably slighter better ringwork for his time), whereas Andre was a true one of a kind.

At first it might not seem like a great fit with Daniel Bryan but I actually think they have the potential to go together pretty great, and to be honest I'm not really concerned about "fit" at this point anyway given there is talk of drafting 100 picks each.

Spoiler:
Roster:
Daniel Bryan

I said I really liked the Foley pick and it was for similar reasons (value over replacement talent). There's not anyone willing to sacrifice his body to put people over quite like Mick, just like there are no big men who come close to Andre all things considered.

I plan to write more about Andre later btw but gotta go right now.

Andre was the other guy i considered, if only for the taker vs andre dream match. I wanna say andres immobility was a reason i went for foley but that would be kind of a pot kettle situation.

I am just not sure how a booker would ever be able to book bryan vs andre. I just dont see how that match could ever be booked that doesnt make them both look really bad. I wouldve probably taken someone who complements bryan more, both in terms of size and work rate.

That said he has the huge (pun not intended) name value you mentioned. You could book andre as the #2 face, but then you are in the same situation vince had with hogan in the 80s where eventually you have to turn andre heel. If we learned anything from those bryan vs (undrafted big man who we obv all know im referring to but someone will blow a gasket if i mention him by name so lets just all pretend like theres some mystery about who this big man is instead), its that bryan vs big man really didnt work very well in large part because his offense looked very awkward against a guy that size.

Theyre good draws for very different reasons but i think you would need to do a raw/smackdown like roster split to keep them apart. Do 1 work rate show, 1 sports entertainment show kind of like smackdown and raw respectively used to be.

Bryan isn't Hogan though. They can easily co-exist, Bryan will be on the undercard for the first few years.

Also if you think Andre is immobile, go watch some if his stuff from Japan. As I said I'll talk more about him later.

Yeah Andre doesn't lack for mobility at all given his size. That was really only true of Andre from like 1986 on, when his body had clearly broken down and only continued to get worse. He put in tons of years showing amazing athleticism. I was taking Andre if he got back to me.

I think Andre is a great fit. Bryan's weakest strength is his drawing ability and that's Andre's biggest. It's a good match.

Sorry about the wait, just woke up.

Spoiler:
Face that can draw? check. Longevity? check. It's hard to find somebody who was a face nearly their entire career and certainly any ten year stretch. Add to that being one of the very best wrestlers of any generation and I have an easy pick here in "The Dragon". Even after not wrestling for 15 years he put on clinics with Chris Jericho at WM 25 and Backlash '09. A true GOAT.

Spoiler:
HHH
Ricky Steamboat

On my phone so I'll have to do the full write up later, but I take Brock Lesnar. Huge draw who works great as a face or monster heel. Longevity use to be an issue but since he returned recently and seems to be around for several years that's not as big of a problem anymore. Plus a HBK/Leanar match would be amazing.

I thought about Brock but the longevity killed it for me. He'd be around 5-7 on my board if I kept one . Brock and HBK would be such a good match. A shame we never got or will get that.

^Thus completes the gutting of all of the people I wanted here. I need a bit of time to think about this but I won't take overly long to pick.

According to Wikipedia, Andre started to lose impact as a drawing card in the early 70s, and [undrafted promoter] came up with the idea to have him pretend to be more immobile than he really was in order to enhance the perception of him as a giant monster, and then his career really took off. I've heard similar things about Hogan and Cena; that they intentionally have been less good as workers in order to draw more.

A Rock/Funk fued would be amazing. Funk could talk about how Rock is an "entertainer" and not really a wrestler.

Yeah I think so too, and the nice thing is that over a long time it could easily be done three ways as face Rock vs. heel Funk, face Funk vs. heel Rock, and face vs. face.

This is fine. As long as he can move about if needed. I think some people are under the impression that '87 Andre is as mobile as he gets.

Btw I don't really want anyone to fall too far behind so if rightdeal hasn't picked by the end of round 2 I may pause the draft and find a replacement (which would be littlekeed if he wants it but not promising anything right now).

I think it's a little early for Bork although he is a unique talent so can't really hate on the pick. He definitely still has longevity problems though; there is still a 7-8 year period where he will completely disappear.

Steamboat, Race and Funk are all solid picks but Race was the only one on my board (I only usually keep 5-6 names at a time on my board fwiw).

Yeah I've got Brock as biggest reach of the draft so far because of the longevity issue, but it's not too bad of a pick.

I did PM SRM at the time I picked FWIW.

You could just drop him at that point too without replacing; I know your initial intent was to cap it at 12 drafters. Sure that takes Sting out of the pool for everyone, but meh.

A few words on Andre from an old forum favourite:

The 8th wonder of the world, Andre the Giant was THE single biggest drawing wrestler for nearly 2 decades. André was mentioned in the 1974 Guinness Book of World Records as the highest paid wrestler in history to that time. He had earned $400,000 in one year alone during the early 1970s. André was one of professional wrestling's most beloved "babyfaces" throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. As such, UNDRAFTED insisted that André was never defeated for 15 years by pinfall or submission prior to WrestleMania III. Which is true. He had never been pinned in the USA.(Name another wrestler who has that record?!!?) During his early years in wrestling Andre, who was legit over 7 feet, was the most agile big man to EVER step into the squared circle. Don't believe me?

Andre invented the Pedigree 20 years before HHH:

The tombstone piledriver

Andre even threw a dropkick in his prime. Yes, a dropkick. He was that agile.

When promoters needed to sell tickets they called on 1 wrestler who could do it day in and day out..... Andre. He has the charisma, the look and the smarts to be ANYONE'S #1 pick. The fact you got this top 5 guy where you did is the steal of the draft bar none. He can be your top babyface or top heel. He was that good at playing both because he is a special attraction and people wanted to see him. The problem is wrestling fans only see the Andre of 1985 and older which is a travesty. Hopefully these videos (there are many more but UNDRAFTED wrestlers were involved) showcase what a unique and amazing athlete Andre was in his prime. Steal of the draft. Nice job.
Thanks DD, couldn't have put it better myself.
