The Kansas City Royals aren't bad because the owners are trying to be the owners of a bad team. They're bad because the Royals ownership and management can't be bothered to do anything to make them good.

The Pittsburgh Pirates would be a better example. The owner has plenty of money, but intentionally lets go of/trades all his best players and keeps a low payroll because they can make money off the better teams anyway.

As an AL fan, I know nothing about the NL. And as a Mariners fan, I lose track of the AL pretty quickly a lot of years too (lately anyway).
