RIP Mitsuhara Misawa, he died today at the age of 46.
He only appeared in America twice that I know of, so he's probably not known to many Americans. But this guy is a legend in Japan. He was Tiger Mask II until he ripped off his mask before a match to start his own legacy. He was in the AJPW main event scene from 1990-2000 and then in the Pro Wrestling NOAH main event scene from 2004-2009. He took part in 24 five-star matches, 5 matches of the year, and won the wrestler of the year award 3 times (1995, 1997, 1999) by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter standards. (As far as I can tell, WON is the most respected wrestling guide available in English).
He didn't really have a gimmick other than "tough guy," but that's the way AJPW/NOAH was/is. He was known for grimacing and his lime-green ring attire. His famous moves were the rolling elbow, the emerald flowsion (AKA emerald fusion to No Mercy fans) and variations of the Tiger Driver. If you've ever heard of the Ganso bomb (the Hangman's DDT in No Mercy), Misawa was the first guy to take it:
