If their market research indicates that it's valuable then it's not going away. But again, that's why there should be squash time to deal with all of that, when it's perfectly understandable and non-harmful to bury the match to a certain extent.
Something like...
A squash by a guy who doesn't currently have a story - push the network, push Twitter, push Total Divas, whatever. Unless it's a brand new guy in which case you should concentrate the commentary on putting over how impressive he looks against Joey Joe Joe Jr. Shabadoo. I personally won't like this, but if it's non-negotiable that they're going to do it, then this is the time to carve out for it. Still the commentators should stop themselves when they see the setup to finish happening, and at least put the guy's finisher over so that the segment does something for him.
A squash by a guy who has a story can be used on commentary as angle advancement. They can occasionally do the guest commentary thing, but it should be way, way less often than they currently do it.
When it's legit star vs. legit star, absolutely put the match over the entire time (that and any underlying angles the wrestlers are involved in).
I like moorobot's suggestions pretty much across the board.
