The location of Chasers really helped that place become a juggernaut when it first opened. But its proximity to Encore probably has been a huge reason why it’s been hit so hard.

Post Encore, it seems like they top out around 10 or so tables maybe 1-2 times a week. Even on a Saturday night like this past weekend, Chasers had 6 tables and Encore had 55-plus around 8 pm. I’ve seen nights where Chasers has had as few as 3-4 tables going recently.

Hampton Falls — whether it’s from Encore or other factors — also seems to have taken a big hit. Their tourney numbers seem to be increasingly declining. They also struggle to get more than a few cash games going many nights a week.

I know some people think it will get better for the NH rooms, but I honestly think it’s more likely to get worse, especially once Encore starts tourneys.

Anyone know any details about what's going on at cheers? It's awfully quiet on that front. I'm not looking to stir the pot just genuinely curious now.

Hey guys, I’m going to be visiting your stomping grounds next weekend (Boston). The plan is to see a game at Fenway Park, spend a day playing poker at the Encore, and do a couple of little touristy things around the city. Trying to keep the Uber fares to a minimum while still being able to explore these areas. Any recommendations on which areas would be best for my particular trip? Anything I should avoid? Thanks for your help.

If you're staying in the city, buy a weekend Charlie card. It'll keep your uber cost very low, as you'll get unlimited public trans. www.mbta.com

It’s listed as closed on PokerAtlas. The location has been up for rent for several months too:

+1 on LordK's reply. The weekend pass is a great value and if you want to get out of the city you can take the commuter rail with it to Salem (great time of year to visit) or a beach. In Boston, the Freedom Trail is good for sightseeing. You can do a tour or just walk the red line on the concrete yourself. Fanueil Hall is a good spot to walk, get a bite, and maybe see some street performers. Museum of Science is great as is the Museum of Fine Arts. Chinatown is a fun walk. If you take the T into other cities, Cambridge has a lot of good spots, especially in Harvard Square and in Somerville I like Davis Square, especially the Somerville Theater which shows a decent amount of classic films. If you enjoy Italian food, the North End has great options for both fine dining and small shops. If you wanted to check out NH poker you could also take the commuter rail to Haverhill and take an Uber for less than $20 to Chasers.

Cheers is dead. Heck, they couldn't get much going BEFORE Encore opened. Zero chance of a 2nd Salem, NH room succeeding now.

You didn't specify where you'll be staying or which game you're going to, as Saturday's starts at 4pm and Sunday's starts at 8pm. They're playing the Yankees, so the games could go 4 hours, so things could be closed or closing by the time it's over. If you were starting at Fenway though, you could simply walk east and there'd be plenty of things almost non-stop along the way. It depends on how much and how far you want to walk.

From Fenway, there are some choices in paths, among them - head towards the Charles River, a.k.a. the Esplanade, and walk east towards the Hatchshell/Downtown Boston; or head towards Berkelee College of Music and Prudential Center. (There might not be a walkover pathway from Fenway/Kenmore to the Esplanade, actually. I can't remember.)

If you choose to head to Prudential Center/Boylston Street, you can check that out (Eately, etc.) and then switch to Newbury Street, which is parallel to Boylston. Keep walking along Newbury Street and you will come across the Boston Commons public park.

If you chose to walk along the Esplanade, you'll also come to a crossover towards the Boston Commons.

Cheers (of the TV show Cheers) will be nearby (across the street from one end of the Commons).

Cut through the Commons and you will come to the Downtown Boston/Chinatown areas. Walk through Downtown and you will reach Boston City Hall, a famously (infamously) ugly building. Across from City Hall is Faneuil Hall. Next to Faneuil Hall are the Haymarket farmer's market and the waterfront. From there, you can walk across the Greenway to the North End (Boston's tiny version of Little Italy or North Beach). The TD Garden is within walking distance from here also, but I don't think there's anything going on over there yet. Maybe a concert?

It's a 15 minute car ride from the North End to Encore Casino during traffic, around 8 minutes without. You can also take the T (subway) to Wellington Station and take the Encore shuttle from there, if you're looking to avoid an Uber.

Since it might make more sense for you to end at Fenway than start from there, do all of this in reverse? I dunno.

Walking Fenway-North End directly non-stop takes about an hour, according to Google.

So we tracked cash games in all of the New England poker rooms from July 15 to August 15th. We wrote up our summary, which I won't link to as we have a banner ad and I've gotten in trouble for that here before.

However, the upshot is that Chasers has taken a big hit, as has Foxwoods. Other rooms have lost tables as well, but most have maintained their $1/$2 action (losing maybe one to two $1/$2 tables). You can still find PLO at the BBC and Foxwoods (and occasionally at Chasers), but most of those tables have gone to Encore.

Importantly, New England overall gained up to 30 tables per night on weeknights and 10 to 20 tables on the weekend since Encore opened. And this is in the dead of summer as compared to last March when last we tracked tables.

We're planning to track again in a couple of months after tournaments start at Encore. I personally think that Chasers and others will rebound come fall, but time will tell!

The timing of this post is interesting as it includes old data from 3-5 weeks ago when Encore was much busier. Today at 4:30 Encore has a total of 41 tables running and Foxwoods 33. No promos at either.

Thank you for all of the recommendations! Good to know about it only being 15 minutes from the North End to Encore, as that is where the girlfriend and I will likely be staying. That is, of course, unless you think somewhere else would be better. Would be perfectly okay with a solid but unspectacular hotel that’s not too terribly far from the North End, Encore, Fenway, etc. Still trying to plan each day but it looks like we’ll be flying in Saturday night, exploring Boston (Heard the Freedom Trail is a nice thing to do?) on Sunday, and going to the Yanks/Sox game on Monday night at 7:10. Haven’t really figured out exactly where we’re staying yet or which attractions/restaurants/whatever else we’ll be doing. Certainly open to suggestions.

Definitely do the duck boat tour if you can. I think it is at Copley place, where to catch it. Not sure of the cost but that is basically Boston's version of hop on off, but you don't get the on off feature. You get a lay of the land at least. Download mbta app that has train times for subway, map to help guide you. Uber/lift apps....

hard to give much concrete advice without knowing where you come from - ie if you're from a big city then the museums/aquarium probably won't matter much

if you're not from a city with nice museums and aquariums then definitely check it out

likewise, if you're not from the coast and have transport then getting some quality grunge seafood would be awesome, a ride up north out of the city along the coast to a clam shack would be amazing - maybe some of these locals here though could point out some good clam shacks that are in the city or easily accessible with charlie - otherwise you can do what every other tourist does and go to legal seafoods

+1 to the charlie card - the city is actually quite small and when the t isn't available there are plenty of busses too. it's really easy to get around quite easily. whenever i visit my sister in JP, my friends in back bay will complain that i'm so far away but a 20-30 min on a bus or train gets me there pretty easily

fenway should be a bit of an experience on its own, enjoy and just don't wear gear for other teams if you happen to be sitting in the bleachers - i've seen even neutral hats like the orioles and padres get grabbed and tossed - roughest bleachers in the majors in my opinion

The Royal Sonesta in Cambridge and the Boston Harbor Hotel on the waterfront are both excellent, and comparable to the Encore price-wise. The Encore water shuttle stops at Long Wharf I think, which is a 3 minute walk from BHH. It's 10-20 minute Uber from either one to the Encore, and both are walkable or T-able to the North End. Try to get a river/Boston view if staying at the Royal Sonesta, and a harbor view if staying at BHH.

I don't eat fried clams, but the Oyster Bar at the Encore has good local seafood, Legal Seafood is always good, and the Union Oyster House is a fun touristy place to do once.

also +1 to freedom trail, forgot to mention that

as mentioned, boston is very small and as the oldest city in america, makes for very interesting walking around through the old neighborhoods

had a friend visit it and each day he'd just go walking along the charles or the freedom trail or to harvard or whatever and then just pop into whichever bar he saw along the way and have a beer then move on

also, if you like beer, i strongly recomend touring Sam Adams, they brew most of the stuff in Ohio now but still make some special batches in boston, give daily tours and very generous samplings, I've toured a number of breweries and that's a pretty solid one to visit, very unpretentious where it's more about beer and much less about them whereas a lot of other places just want to toot their own horn a bit

they'll also give you a free beer glass they actually got a team at MIT to design for them, it's that slighly off shaped glass you sometimes see in bars today, they'll even explain the science behind the design - pretty cool they didn't just brew some awesome beer but are the people behind what is slowly becoming the standard glass shape for drinking beer in america as well
