Midnight Tournament review:

Ok so me and the fiance went to the Midnight tournament a couple of weeks ago (I had asked if anyone had gone and no one had any real info other than what is posted on MS's website about structure)

here is our take on it.

There were about 45 or so people (I forget exact number) crowd was very friendly except for a few people. Not as many spewtards as we expected. Poker playing was solid for most part (except for 1 guy who got moved to my table- more on this later) blinds did go up fast (12 mins) but people didn't drag their feet to make descions (except for that same 1 guy who got moved to my table). people kept the game moving and it would go around about once per blind level.

I've been in a tournament that had 25 min blinds and it didn't make it around the table once so yeah the blinds go up fast, but if you can make a descion and not need 10 mins you should be fine.

I busted out early after taking a massive hit - here is why.

I was mid stacked (about average based off of the Clock/stat) UTG with KK I make a 4x raise folds to SB he couldn't make a descion....he took aprox 4-5 mins to decide. He then goes all-in. BB folds, I instantly call (had him covered by about 1k) and I knew he didn't have AA if it took that long to decide.

He went all-in with 27 off.

Needless to say, he hit trip 2's on the flop and my KK didn't hold or boat up.

Other than that one guy making that move, I didn't see too much spewtard moves. The fiance made it to top 4 (all with about even stacks) and they chopped it 4 ways (top 6 paid I believe). she said the play was pretty solid and she eventually was the one that took out the 2/7o spewtard when he tried to pull the same bit with pocket 4s against her pocket As when the flop showed A,Q, 9 rainbow.

Don't want to completely derail from the thread but here is a comparison of New London VS Norwich + other BS info.

New London:
  • population of about 25k
  • population seems to be in decline
  • higher than average crime rate
  • unemployment rate about 9%
  • about 16% of the households are below poverty level
  • above average amount of college aged people (Connecticut College, Mitchell College)
  • racial diversity - Races in New London:

    * White Non-Hispanic (56.1%)
    * Hispanic (19.7%)
    * Black (18.6%)
    * Other race (9.1%)
    * Two or more races (5.7%)
    * American Indian (2.3%)
    * Filipino (0.6%)

Norwich:
  • population of about 36k
  • about 10% unemployment rate
  • below average crime rate
  • 11.5% of households below poverty level
  • Less racial diversity
    Races in Norwich:

    * White Non-Hispanic (80.4%)
    * Black (6.8%)
    * Hispanic (6.1%)
    * Two or more races (3.9%)
    * Other race (2.8%)
    * American Indian (2.4%)
    * Chinese (0.8%)

Neighborhoods to avoid in Norwich: Taftville, Greeneville, East Side, and Downtown

Surrounding Towns:
  • Groton
  • Mystic
  • Stonington
  • Waterford

Once you leave the Waterford and enter into the Saybrook/Westbrook area, you're going to be shedding out a LOT more money for rent.

Best choice IMO: Stonington (Greg Raymer needs to get itt)

Source of data varies, but mostly http://www.city-data.com

I had a dealer who refused to count the size of an all in bet untill it was called. I thought that was a little bull and I'm glad it was only a 1/2 game or I woulda had to leave

Just curious , how he explained his rejection?

Something like "I am tired gimme a break , you are not calling this all in anyway."
It happens to inexperienced dealers, when they let themselves to
be intimately involved into the game,then they do some really weired things. Or it was his first day dealing poker? I assume potential caller was not covered.

I've yet to play in the 15k guaranteed on Fridays. Anyone got any experience in it?

Hows the field, lots of tourists starting the weekend with a tourney or a half way decent field?

Hows the turnout, is MS losing on the 15k or does it get the required number of players to cover?

Just got back...it was nice to see you, AnyMouse! I will be at the 2/5 next time, not to worry--I made over 1k this session without any substantial luck or great cards, it was a gradual build with good v-betting and laydowns along the way.

xbeatax, I was also at the table with your driver, he is a cool guy, but he has to watch it when it comes to bashing Philip Rivers at my table .

Jerseys,

If you make a grand at 1/2 in a night... you had Very good cards! There may not have been any giant standout pots, but you're running at like 3x EV at least.

Not that you don't deserve it or haven't perhaps suffered the other side of EV at times. I'm just saying 1k is a ****ing awesome night at 1/2, and you definitely have to run good to get there.

Anyway, congrats! Good to catch you too.

You would be surprised, although I will say that the one time I was dealt aces, some guy accidentally threw a green and a white into the pot and the bet stood, which is a type of luck in itself.

I will agree that is was way +EV and that it is a night that was assisted by certain types of luck, but I did not always get to showdown, if you catch my drift.

Or maybe it was the other way around...he actually mentioned it while I was in a hand, so I apologize for possibly/likely having it backwards >_<.

i don't think it's a derail-- it's relevant to this B+M room.

don't forget Westerly and Charlestown, RI. Don't know what they're like now, but used to go to some very nice beaches around there. There must be some rental deals in ok areas, and it's not so far.

lol, ty.

i had about 300 in front of me early in the night, but ended up losing a 700+ pot when I had 99 and flopped bottom set on a Q J 9 board and my opponent had KT and I failed to improve.
