Wouldn't you know it, aggressive young kid at the table who seem to know a few people in the room was the first to bust. He was the only one raising pot pre-flop without aces, and getting called in every spot that limped. Got out flopped just about every time.
I basically never saw a bet turn the first four levels. Pizza at the break. Came back after the break with 17,900 in chips still. I get aces with one of them suited and a dangler. Min raise preflop with blinds escalating and actually get half the field to fold. I'm UTG and make the mistake of not paying attention to stack sizes. I continuation bet what looks like a pretty safe board, and I have backdoor flush possibilities. Short stack goes all in for less than my bet, next player goes all in for only 3,000 more. Folds to me, I call and I'm up against set of threes and straight draw. I win the side pot and short stack wins the main. This is the only pot I rake the whole tournament. I get my money in good with aces and some backdoor draws heads up, and first time PLO player beats me when they make a straight on the turn. Off to the cash game.
Pretty soft table. Tournament regular named Jamie (not me) sits down after busting out of the tourney. Sees a raise and a call in front of him, looks at his cards and goes all in for $100. Everyone folds to the guy who had flatted the original raise who says it's his last hand and calls. Has KT in bad shape against tournament reg's jacks. King on the window = rebuy! Guy who won decides to stay one more orbit, but eventually leaves with his double up. Nice form, sir!
I'm up and down, waiting for a good spot when Gambit busts out of the tourney and wants to get some dinner. I tell him to wait a couple of hands and I will join him. I get 9cTc in the big blind and complete a $7 bet by UTG. To the flop four handed. Flop is 9-8-3c. I hit that board hard with top pair, backdoor straight draws, and backdoor flush draws. I bet $20. UTG goes all in for $63, and I call with the nuts. Villain has A9 of hearts. Turn is a Queen no club, and river is 2 of clubs. Nice hand, sir. Down $100 for the day and down for the whole weekend.
Ahh, so were you and Gambit the ones playing some sort of card game prior to the tourney?
You are spot on in your assessment with regards to the over-play of big pocket pairs. Fact is, many have never played Omaha or have only done so a handful of times. So when they get dealt Aces, Kings, etc, their hold-em mentality takes over.
Perfect example, we're down to 4. I've got the chip lead. Guy who is a close second pots it PF. I have 6778 IP and call. It's clear he has a big pair as he's shown down as such in prior instances. I flop a set and some sort of straight draw ( can't remember ) on a 9 high flop. He pots, I re-pot, and he calls with Jacks and no draw of any sort. GG.
