It makes you think about a lot of spots very deeply and adjusting to peoples tendencies, which translates into skills vs all players. Note-taking is also important IMO and this is a good time to practice.
You have to have a good reg game if you are ever going to play 100s+, and I do feel like it improves your thought process immensely playing regs.
Also playing weak regs is fun, they are almost always ridiculously predictable.
Other than that, a good way to improve is to get a good bunch of people together on skype and just talk poker all the time. Its kinda like a passive learning process because you are always talking about hands or strategies or whatever but not really consciously 'studying'.
Its good motivation to learn and grind as well, and as a added bonus (as anyone who has me on skype can vouch for) a good spot to vent when you run bad.
