Yes but also no
When I was there, the oft cited thing was that the population had doubled in last ten years from out of staters moving in so we're dealing with a rapidly changing demographic.
It is the home of places like focus on the family and other super influential Christian right organisations but it's also the home to pawnshops, liquor stores, meth heads, military (a whole lot of them) and send to attract a ton of hippies
For example, my college is possibly the most liberal college in America, it's without a doubt top ten
A few years back us & world news reports did a study and found that we had the wealthiest student body in America and one of the poorest alumni groups because it's mostly drum circle trustafarians who graduate and then work for a non profit - anecdotally I found this to be the case as well
One of the churches used to pay a guy to come to our campus each day to educate us liberals but he was pretty nice and was genuinely very pleasant to speak with
We did host a fairly well known Palestinian speaker once and man the Christian right was not happy about that and protested it hard.
Other than that, unless you're joining a church you're unlikely to cross paths. In fact, they tend to own a lot of land and would allow our geology classes free reign to study rocks on their property
They definitely have more influence nationally through lobbying the government than they do locally in my opinion. For example, the "every Jew gets to go to Israel for free" is funded by these groups because they want to ensure America stays culturally aligned with Israel.
