Where is still up in the air. Considering Portland, but it's so far out that we aren't putting too much thought into it yet, as so much can change by then.
Nice, at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Portland, OR or Portland, ME (or one that I don't even know?)

I've been to Portland, OR twice for a conference and it was a blast. Tons of local beer and breweries, legal cannabis, and was a lot of fun to cycle around.

Portland, OR. I DGAF about cannabis, though I like that it's legal for those who do want to indulge. The beer culture there is great, poker is everywhere with really reasonable rake, and it's big enough to get good concerts without being so big as to be a traffic nightmare. Also, the weather is moderate. It's a bit pricey, but not ridic.

We also really like CO, but the Denver area is too big these days, and most of the rest is a bit small. Still, the Springs is on our list. My sinuses don't love the dry air, and the poker scene isn't the best, but it checks pretty much all the other boxes. We've also discussed Minneapolis/St. Paul, which we both really like as a city, but the weather is a bit too swingy, and the traffic level is iffy.

Who knows? We might end up in a lot of different places. Only things I'm a hard pass on are the East Coast metro-sprawl of doom, or any area with a meth-kitchen based economy.

Taking advantage of the weather...

I like all those places.

Minneapolis was a good time and I like Minnesota a lot, we get up to Duluth to see family now and again. But yeah, that weather is legit. My wife wanted to move to Portland but I wasn't on board, not enough snow or sunshine for me and good skiing(Mt hood) is too far. I have no intention of ever moving back east, so I get that. Before I visited CO I was pretty set on ending up in VT, but it's not even close now.

So you'd start a tenure track position at age. . . something?

Mt Hood is what 1 hr from the city? I guess it depends on which part, and that is expensive as hell.

Not really going to worry about that. I might not even work after I retire from the military, as I'll have a very good pension at that point. I probably will teach, but not worried about tenure. As long as it's not adjunct serf work, I'm in.

A bunch of "private clubs" that charge a "daily membership fee" in lieu of rake, as raked games are illegal there, but rake-free poker in private clubs is legal. Check out the Portland thread in Venues and Communities.

What has <name of dog> got in her mouth? A rubber float used for training retriever dogs, or something else?

It shows 2hrs13min from Portland proper. I'm 1hr15min away from skiing if I leave in time.

From that thread:

"Bachelor is like 3.5-4 hours. To actually get from Portland to skiing on Mt Hood is about 1.25 hours (Timberline/Ski Bowl) or 1.5 hours (Meadows).

The skiing isn't great, but it isn't bad either. *shrug*"

Ok, closer to mediocre skiing than Google maps says.

Looks like PC, Utah is on the epic pass. You'll have some decent surrounding options too.

Trix and I are heading west to abuse our legs and livers 29 Jan until 2 Feb.

We have Epic passes... The short list, in order...

Whistler
Park City
Heavenly

If I had to book today, we would be heading to Whistler, based on current snow conditions. I'm going to wait until Tuesday to do the booking, and I'm fairly sure it will be Whistler.

Methinks the meth-kitchen economy is strong in the Portland area.

I would not move to the PNW if lift service skiing was high on the list.

Otoh, it's really goat for alpine and mountaineering ski options.

FW - My kid landed a great gig so she is 100% off the dole. I am currently in no need to earn. SPC and I own our place completely. I have zero debt. That being said ski towns aint cheap and I will need to do something. I have a couple o options. However, the most likely/easiest scenario is pokering (800-1200 hrs/year). I am in no rush to start but I have been thinking about it.

You’ve always struck me as the kind of guy that defines “capable”. A guy who can wake up in the morning with jack-ish in the pockets and he starts making calls and running errands and next thing you know you’ve eaten lunch out, and made enough cash to come home with weed and groceries for the week. A true hustler.

I figure you can walk into any town you want to live in and within a week you’ve got a good paying gig lined up and have been invited over for dinner and drinks by one of the more interesting folks in town, "The Pen:" Live NLHE Chat Thread
