<shrug> 3 hours, give or take, with a couple breaks to post.
My wife bought me some nice blocks of maple and mahogany for Christmas (gotta love a wife that'll go to the lumberyard for your Christmas present) and I'm pretty psyched to start in on my next carving.
As it turns out, the blade was a complete wreck. I started out thinking it just needed touching up, so I started with the finest grit. When that took to long, I moved down one, then two more. So I wasted a good part of the time.
NBD, though, cuz I like sharpening my tools as much as I like carving with them. Not a big fan of wasting time, and if I had started at the correct grit, I would have been able to get two or three done.

I sort of don't have any army buddies. I was in a weird spot--I was a platoon sergeant as a promotable sergeant, so I didn't have any peers. I had folks working for me, and they're not buddies, and I was too junior to hang out with the real (E-7) platoon sergeants. About the only person I'm still in contact with from the Army was my platoon leader.
I'm Facebook friends with my first sergeant, too. Guy was a huge influence in my life, and when I sent him a friend request on Facebook he said "I don't remember you at all."
