Any show recommendations that come remotely close to this one?
Veronica Mars (obv plenty others, depending on what you've seen).

Undeclared is the successor to Freaks and Geeks by the same people, but not quite as good imo. Features Jax from Sons of Anarchy in one of his first American roles.

Undeclared is great and is probably a better choice right after watching freaks and geeks(but VM is better).

Almost done watching Freaks & Geeks, and I m in the same boat. I really like it, I dont get why it ever got cancelled.

I watched The Heat last night, new movie with Sandra Bullock, and the gym teacher from Freaks & Geeks has a small role in it.

Anyways. I also enjoyed VM, so yea go with that.

Watched Undeclared. Entertaining, but clearly not on the same level as Freaks and Geeks. Both shows were cancelled too early tho :/

Guess I will try VM next

A show's quality has very little to do with whether it is cancelled or renewed. Freaks and Geeks was cancelled for the same reason everything gets cancelled, not enough people watched it.

I was pretty confident about putting the shield above the wire in terms of entertainment in my top 10 list and now with season 5 of the shield im thinking about putting it in front in term of quality as well. such a sick season

theres often a cause/effect relationship here.

Lots of stuff is perceived differently when it comes out than it is several or many years removed. You would have to go a pretty long way to find anyone who hasn't seen The Shawshank Redemption, but it only made $28 million in its initial run (its after the fact status would probably make it one of the most seen movies in history).

This same idea is how shows that were way ahead of their time become cult favorites years later (Wonderfalls is a good example of this). The new hipster way demands that everyone is on the cutting edge as it's happening, so finding good cult shows in this era that didn't make it will be more rare, in my opinion.

So I finally decided to choose a show from one of those I listed ITT, i'm marathoning The Shield on my free time. Watched the first two seasons and I'm loving it so far, with a few complaints.
Spoiler:

They seem to complicate plots just to drag them through the season. Vic could've killed Armadillo but he decided only to burn his ****ing face on a stove. Are you ****ing kidding me? On what planet is smart to torture a genius psychopath who likes raping little girls and then just let him there? They could've easily killed him and got rid of the body.

Also didnt like the ending of the pilot. It was made in a way that it would shock the audience about how bad Vic is and nothing he does after that shows that he could've done something like that in cold blood like it was shown.

Character I love: Dutch

Like: Vic, dumb friend I forgot the name

Hate: Dutch's partner, black old lady. God I wanted to kill her for being such a pain in the ass in s02.

The Shield is praised by dumb people as a high quality drama. It is a simple show that is entertaining.

The pilot is not good, and definitely unrealistic.

Amazon prime has 4 seasons of covert affairs, might be up people's alley if they enjoyed vmars. Btw, although vmars is not available on netflix (at leafs where I am) I did see it was available on amazon for around $40 per season

I hated nearly every second of the first full season I watched of that show. I finally managed to pull the plug early in season 2, I think. Good move on your part to cut your losses early.

I dropped it early on'ish in season 2, but picked it back up. I'm glad I did. It's a completely different show. It got pretty damn dark, and most of this last season was anti-procedural, which always helps.

I was state-certified gifted in elementary school and went on to graduate from a top-25 university. I love The Shield. Theory disproved.

24 is a simple show that is entertaining. I can see an argument for your belief being made for the first few seasons of The Shield. However, Shield S5 is among the best seasons of any show ever, and the series had the most satisfying finale of any of the top dramas -- Breaking Bad included. Not until Breaking Bad's Ozymandias did I get the same gut-wrenching feeling from watching a television show that I got many times from watching The Shield. Perhaps you quit the show before it really got good.
