Yeah, it is kinda like that. But it's not so much they feel they're above things like the Spice Girls, it's that they're so wrapped up in "classical study" that they just don't care about it.

I got it, but only because I vividly remember Geri Halliwell's nude layout in Playboy and cover shot wearing a Union Jack dress.

also what was up with 1st place wagering $0 in a non runaway?
He stated he knew absolutely nothing about pop culture and would be better suited wagering nothing.

so you're saying that these ppl are just nose deep in books studying 24/7 in the hopes of one day getting on a game show that they are completely oblivious to everything going on in the world around them?

weird why is it that all of the actually great jeopardy champs also know a great deal about pop culture?

couldn't just be that these contestants weren't particularly bright and didn't have a very extensive base of knowledge?

Yeah, long gone are the days when you could get away with not knowing a lot about pop culture. I think as much as 20% of the written test was based on it. Hell, they had a whole category based on reality TV last night, and not well-known reality TV either.

Look guys, I've played trivia at the highest level with tons of top players for over 20 years now. Sure, the best of the best and some of the rest do know pop culture. I'm not saying everybody is totally ignorant about the topic. But by far, people that are good at trivia are typically academics who don't veer far from the classics. Therefore they don't know pop culture, they don't listen to much current radio, watch much current TV, etc.

You may not like this answer, it's the exact same reason why most contestants fail miserably on the sports categories. But take it from someone in the trivia trenches, it's the absolute truth.

ya i wasn't suggesting that they should be "studying" pop culture, just seems like huge cultural phenomenons like spice girls or the beatles etc would be something they would just come across in the course of their regular life.

i totally get them not being good at sports, cuz if you don't actively engage in sports its easy to have no clue about that stuff, but it seems hard to have lived thru the 90's and been relatively engaged in the outside world and not have been subjected to brittny spears, spice girls, backstreet boys etc.

How is it even possible to live in society and not know popular culture? Brutal bet from third today for new champ, after he had previously seemed to have some sense of strategy.

I didn't even have a guess. But literature/novels/authors are a huge weakness for me. I just don't read books.

Grapes of Wrath should be a gimmie for anyone who actually makes it on the show, very surprised the guy in first missed it.

$7,600+$4,000=$11,600
$11,000-$4,000=$7,000
$12,600-$9,401=$3,199

What is 2nd trying to do here? Math error? Sheer cluelessness?

Think 3rd went too big. Maybe expect 2nd to go $4201 to cover 3rd, so max bet of $800 from 3rd? (prefer $0)

what a horrible FJ attempt... there's like 3 extremely well known bodies of water in the very north. At least say the Artic Ocean or something. What is River? cmon.

Gotta give David credit for using proper buzzer strategy though (pointer finger instead of thumb). No one does that.

I think if they're under 40, they probably learned very little about WWII in school. That's the only reason I can come up with for this and the Potsdam triple stumper.

Kid leading 11,000-5,800-4,600 in the midst of running a very easy vocabulary category gets a DD and correctly bets it all and the audience groan and gasp. He then asks "Why not?", lol. He gets it right and pretty much wins the game right there.

We often see people bet small when they aren't confident in the category, but we rarely ever see people bet big when they are confident.

Kids. Pretty epic run by the kid to begin DJ. He didn't even do that well in the first round. I believe he was in third. Then he opened DJ by sweeping the first eight clues and nailing the true DD. And the kids keep whatever total they end up with over the $15k minimum. First time I've ever heard the old, "Well, I've always wanted to say this ..." intro on an $11k TDD. He still needed to pull the last question for the lock. Surprised none of them got FJ, being that they probably were watching Sesame Street not too long ago.

That kid from last week had more intestinal fortitude than second-place guy tonight. Found all three DDs and wimped out on each and every one.
