You should see his writing partner, Carlton Cuse's new show, Bates Motel. It's almost like he's a dog on a leash. He's allowed to wander out to the deep end, but once he goes too far the chain yanks him back into making a good show. That show was mere minutes from turning into a terrible TV show, this season (same thing happened last season), but somehow it's managed to become really good, though I haven't seen last night's episode yet.

I actually really like Lost, I even defended the show in this sub earlier, but it's like this feeling of going back to an ex that made me really happy for some time only she was so ****ing life draining that after some ups and downs we ended, I was happy and there's no way I'd ever invest any of my time in her again, even though she tells me she's changed.

Does cutthroat kitchen search the globe for the worst strategists they can find? The lack of basic game theory on this show is cringe worthy. It seems like there is never a single contestant who understands the absolute basics of auction buying.

Yea people that laugh at how bad Jeopardy contestants screw betting up need to watch this show.

They either don't bid at all or bid like $5-10K more than they should. It's hilarious to see someone knocked out with $25K when they were hoping to save the money for later. Or they "revenge" bid instead of ganging up on one contestant.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys bet $50,000 into a $25 pot playing poker.

Yeah, Turn (amc) is very solid! Surprised it doesn't have thread yet.

Caught a glimpse of a western show called Klondike the other day. It's on Discovery but a fiction drama. Looked kinda cheap though.. The way it was shot.
Is it any good ootv?

It's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but done right. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

i have a suggestion for the mods of this forum....

put a poll at the top of every tv show thread with 10 options, so we can rank the shows 1-10.

10 is high and 1 is low.

or at least start new tv show threads that way

It would have to be a poll where you can change your vote as shows get better/worse.

Speaking of great shows (well, not really, but whatever), I rewatched Utopia and its sooooo well made. I forgot just how awesome it was. The direction, writing and editing is basically perfect.

I am unsure how helpful a poll is, its probably better to just have a strictly no spoiler thread to discuss quality of shows, combined with the polling someone did to select a top 20 shows a couple months ago that should be enough.

Polls don't really work because there are lots of ways that shows can be evaluated, leading to very messy numbers. On quality alone, shows like Scandal or The Following would be rated like a 5 of 10. But based on entertainment value, a show like The Following hits a 6.5, while a show like Scandal hits an 8. A show like The Blacklist has an entertainment value of 9, while it has a quality value of maybe 7. So, how do you properly quantify something like that?

rate a show based on how much you enjoy it. that is what i would do. scandal gets a 7. blacklist gets a 4. the following gets a 3.

i mean the poll would just be there and you could participate or not, read it or not. it doesn't take much to add a poll when you start a thread.

That's not really a good way to go about rating something, though, because a lot of factors go into what makes a show "watchable".

If I was rating shows I doubt I'd go lower than 6 but that's just me.

so example

The Wire 10
Justified 9
Arrow 8
Blacklist 7
Under The Dome 6

The best way to comprehensively rate a show is to discuss the show.

Even a shallow discussion crushes a rating system. Numbers, especially as low a response rate as you'd get here, tell you virtually nothing about a subjective medium.

What does ten people rating a show 7/10 get you? There is a reason a good response to the question of what to watch starts with a question of what they like already.

Yeah, The Blacklist is a perfect example. In a realistic scenario, I would probably rank it around a 7.5 or 8, just because it's so fun to watch James Spader eat up that part. Without him, or basing on other factors, it would normally be a 6.5 show for me. R_Webb has it ranked at a 7, which I am totally on board with, and fv has it ranked a 3, which is lol.

TV watching is so subjective, and there are always different strokes for different folks. Ratings systems are almost always terrible. I think Hannibal is listed as an 8.2 on imdb, which is like "how is this possible?" It's easily a 9 show, and almost all of my quibbles are stupid characters and that the sound mix could be better. Those barely harm the show at all. For me, Fargo is about the closest thing I've seen to a 10, so far, but that could totally change by the end of the series.
