Why did this Kurn poster suddenly decide to show up in this thread?

Who knows what players will become available after all the cuts are made around the league. I am not going to mad or upset if they keep Mallett, just think there might be more value to the team in giving the roster spot to someone else.
Mallett is probably heading to Tampa tomorrow along with Wilfork and Vereen, and we're just going to be sitting here on our asses trying to figure out how BB actually sees the game of football.

I think that is the scenario where the backup QB matters. if Brady tears his ACL, then yeah basically it doesn't matter so much. unless Peyton also tears his ACL.
Often overlooked scenario. We tend to think of Brady, at his age, either lost for the season or there. He and Peyton have their own special circumstances for losing a season but neither have missed games mid-season. But either could easily get concussed or knocked out for a game or two. Who's stepping in to get that win total up to help their playoff chances?

Personally I would trust Jimmy G at this point, but I don't see them just dropping Mallett.

Expect them to roll with 3 QBs and RM as the #2.

One name to keep in mind for #Patriots left guard? Sebastian Vollmer. Seriously. Then Marcus Cannon could play right tackle

Ben Volin ‏@BenVolin 1h
I'm told the #Patriots had a meeting with the veteran offensive linemen yesterday and told Vollmer about moving to guard, Cannon to tackle
Not something that ever crossed my mind. Has Vollmer ever play OG?

FWIW, I'd think they'd move Cannon instead of Vollmer. Not too keen on a 6' 8" guard.

If Dante is still in charge you don't question this idea at all. Right now, you just think, "errrrmm"

PS Kurn are you a real Pats fan or just trolling us all of a sudden?

Real Pats fan. Lived in RI for the past 11 years, Boston area for 34 years before that.

the difference between the guys (in terms of expected wins added) is probably very marginal. it's of course not 1 win over a 3 game stretch. but since the result of any given game is going to be a win or a loss (or tie) and not 40% of a win, I don't think you can really think about it in those terms.

Mallett to Houston. Want to see the return but have to say I'm a bit surprised.

I think Jimmy deserved to win the back up QB job during pre-season. Once that happened I always thought they would move on from Mallett. 6th rd pick in return is probly fair.

6th round pick is what I've read. Not that surprised at all. Playing Jimmy G for the full game in preseason 4 seemed to telegraph that Mallettt was not their #2 guy.

Texans were the main speculation from many people up here. They need a QB and O'Brien was familiar with Mallett.

The return about is what I expected, I just think its going to be asking a lot of Jimmy G to win games this year. Coaching staff obviously has confidence in him. I'd have used the roster spot on Mallett, although I understand the reasoning.

2 years ago when they cut Hoyer i felt like it was for more off-field reasons such as salary/cap hit. This trade feels totally down to on field reasons. Garappolo won the backup job. If Brady was to go down Garappolo was going to go in ahead of Mallett.

It was asking a lot of Mallett to win games for them, too.

The Pats are going to get a lot of heat for these QB moves, but they found a treasure chest in the sand once upon a time and are still using their metal detector. Replacing Brady will be a unique moment in NFL history and I don't see how you can fault a team for thinking ahead. There are so many worse ways a team could handle this situation. This is a team with a long-term vision in place within its organization's main players, and that's more than you can say for half of the league just trying to win enough games to keep jobs.

I'm a gentler, kinder version of Salva these days. Only Goodie will take offense.

I like the Jimmy G pick, just think Mallett would be marginally better this year

Replacing Brady is obviously important to the Pats but it isn't historically unique.

Mallett being better than Jimmy G this year isn't really the question. The question was is keeping Mallett AND Jimmy G on the roster better than keeping just Jimmy G. I think that's what made the decision an easy one.

Yes, obviously I think the value of Mallett over Jimmy G for this season is worth more than the 53rd player on the roster. I think its marginal and wouldnt second guess even if the worst happens, Brady misses six weeks, a guy playing for Eastern Illinois isn't ready when the lights come on and teams game plan, and the season goes down the toilet.

I assume he plays, but my god, this is beyond frustrating, especially after last year's debacle.

So in 3WR sets this season who is the 3rd WR? taking it for granted that Edelman and Dobson are top 2. Im sure alot of it will depend on the situation but curious what their best combination would be.

Gotta assume it's Amendola. That's why they're paying him. Maybe Thompkins comes out for particular situations. The X's and O's goes beyond my casual fandom.
