Brewer earns a lot of the credit for capably assuming the crucial role as the team’s wing stopper, effectively guarding the opponent’s premier perimeter scorer. But the defensive play of Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic is a stone joy to witness and criminally underrated around the league.

Unlike the trove of gamblers who literally leave their team in a lurch by going for steals, Rubio excels at on-ball perimeter defense and has keen judgment on when to jump the passing lanes for interceptions. Long, lanky and surprisingly rugged, his commitment to defense rebuts the stereotype about European ballers and compensates for his wayward shooting on the offensive end.

Pekovic is even more underrated, sabotaged by the lazy overreliance on blocked shots in judging the effectiveness of a big man in the paint. With the notable exception of Roy Hibbert anchoring Indiana’s league-leading defense, the rest of the top five shot-blockers in the NBA toil on teams ranking anywhere from 14th to 21st in team defense.

Sure the likes of Brook Lopez, Spencer Hawes and Anthony Davis can swat a shot. But none of them can hold a candle to Pek when it comes to disrupting a pick-and-roll.

ESPN has an Insider piece ranking the ability of each 2013 first-round pick to contribute now.

Dieng: 3-way tie for 27th.
Shabazz: 30th.

Where do you begin with Muhammad? His advanced age makes you wonder how high his ceiling is, but he’s not particularly ready to contribute right now either. He’s also the type of player who is a better athlete in tests than he is in game. A good offensive rebounder, he might be able to earn some minutes as a hustle guy, but that’s not really his game or demeanor. Lastly, he’s stuck behind some established vets on a team that’s competing for a playoff berth, but even on a lesser team he’d have to scrap to find a place.

Other names of interest:
Olynyk: 1st
McCollum: 3rd
Adams: 6th
Bullock: 13th
Karasev: 14th
Alphabethands: 15th (!)

That ad is great.

Re: Rubio steals. From what I've seen this year he has an unreal knack for knowing when he can recover from a steal attempt. I rarely seem to ever see a guy really go for a steal and be able to recover - even the quick guys....but I assume it's b/c Rubio somehow just has the right sense of not only when he might be able to get a steal but all the moments he can maybe get one and definitely recover.

It's like he's playing with house $$ and not even gambling most of the time.

The steals are becoming commonplace, too. Entering Friday's game at Denver, Rubio's got 30 of them -- more than any other NBA player. Last year, he tied Chris Paul for the league lead in takeaways per game (though Rubio played 13 fewer contests due to ACL recovery that leaked into the season).

But those numbers aren't fully indicative of Rubio's defensive contributions. Tipped passes, clogged passing lanes, and general disruption are equal parts of his game.

"I wish we charted deflections," Love said. "He gets so many -- not only steals -- but just hands on balls that lead to people, whether it's different guards or big men, speeding up their game and that goes into a poor shot."
Best defensive PG in the NBA imo.

He looks the same as he has to me.

JJB with some great minutes early on.

I wouldn't say all, but not a good game. And we barely lost. Against the biggest hfa in the league. I'm ok with that.

It was a game we should have won vs an inferior opponent. All our starters player below par, and the defensive effort was very poor by all of them. Love & PEK didnt even seem to be trying at all defensively or rebounding at times. Rubio looked slow defensively. Martin missed shots he usually makes. Brewer reverted to his old self several times (bad, gambling steal attempts, bad shots and poor ball handling/TOs). Cunningham looked bad half the time too. Barea made a couple stupid plays, but he was good otherwise. Hummel looked ok except he didnt make any shots.

Denver does enjoy that thin air home court advantage, and that probably led to our lack of energy, but we need to play harder than that.

That's just not true. Neither PEK not Love played "below par." JJB was electric, it sounds like your biggest critique is that he wasn't perfect? I mean whatever, but but you don't score >110 when everyone plays like ****.

defense seemed exceptionally ****ty

I thought Faried out worked Love for a few rebounds as well.

28 pts on 10/20 shooting 10 rebs 2 asts 3 stls 2 blks

Below par

Obv his defense sucked. He's Kevin Love. That's par.

Love's defense was worse than in any game I've seen this season. PEK too. Rubio too. Faried beat the **** out of Love & PEK on the boards way too many times, and it was lack on energy on our part. Denver got way to many easy layups during a large percentage of the game. That's what cost us the game.

Love's numbers look good because he played well offensively, but I expect a lot more out of him based on how he's played so far this season, which up to this point in this season has been a lot better than ever as far as defensive effort.

It was nice to see the effort in the 2nd quarter and at the very end of the game, but we needed to have that kind of effort for most of the game instead of for about 30% of it.

We need to beat the hell out of Boston tomorrow.

THIS. omg what an abomination that was on D. completely embarrassing from love in all aspects, harden-esque effort levels are unacceptable good gawwwwwwwwddd. Hope there's not too many more games like that one

Wolves just didn't have the defensive effort IMO. Maybe they couldn't adjust to the air or something this time. Denver played OK but not even that well IMO, just more activity all around.

To me it looked like Love was just expecting Faried to just let him get rebounds. I didn't think Love fought for any rebounds until the 4th quarter and I think he 4 or 5 of his 10 in that quarter.

Defense looks slightly more coordinated so far tonight, not really clicking completely though. The boards situation at least initially did not look good though - Wolves should be pounding teams on the boards when Love and Pek are in there, all the time not just most of the time.

yeah.

While this wasnt a close game, we were lucky to be playing Boston tonight. They are terrible.
