In 20 years most of the strip joints will be effectively useless destinations, and will probably be torn down or left to become huge monuments to a bygone era.

Might as well get the cash now while you can.

Casino employees are not exactly a reliable source of information.

Someone posted this on a Facebook page on March 23 and he was right:

insider scope. It looks like the paid parking will go into effect May 31st or June 1st. forALL MGM properties, mark your calendars, unless it gets delayed again
But then he stunned me by also posting this:

Quote:
Insiders have also told me that all Poker rooms will shut down except for ARIA, and Bellagio. The poker rooms at the other properties are always empty
Does that sound realistic? It is true that many of those rooms aren't busy with the exception of MGM but wow if that happens. What happens to people who have comps in those rooms if they close down? Will they still be able to use them?

This move would also make the other rooms busier during the WSOP which would suck because they are already too busy during that time.

If they shut down the brand "new" Mirage poker room, that would be lame. Alot of money wasted there.

Low limit games are money losers for the casinos. They should have shut them down long ago.

^The rake isn't higher at higher stakes though. So why not close down every room?

it's marginally higher and those players are more apt to go off in the pit for higher amounts of money

True, but unlike 1/2 almost every pot is max rake. If it is $5 per half hour per spot, they still make more than 1/2. However, getting rid of the lower stakes game is a horrible idea. Nothing will kill a poker room faster. You need the feeder games.

If they close down those rooms then I guess it answers the question of whether they plan on validating poker players for parking in those places. Not that I ever expected that but I'm surprised at the number of people who thought they cared about poker players that much.

The times where 1/2 games fed higher stakes are long gone. If you check the available games on Bravo, you can see that there are more 1/2 and 1/3 games going than all other kind of games combined in LV. And the majority of those players will never play anything bigger.

If 0.5/1 was an option at the bigger card rooms, there's a decent chance that would be the busiest game. Nowadays, lots of people want to play lower, not higher.

Is there anybody they care about even a little bit?

Hey Petey quick questions, do they have you staying for the duration of the project? Did you have to rent/buy a house or is MGM putting you up?

Also if MGM potential closes say all
The poker rooms but MGM, Aria, Bellagio and Mirage (as a hypothetical) the other 4 resorts that have poker rooms (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur and Monte Carlo) would still have close by options in the MGM family for their guest to play at. So at the end of the day that will probably only add to their profit growth plan.

I think a big indication of the rooms that would close is, they would change the promo structure. They would need to give back all the promo dollars some how before they would close. I think when the promos change, that could be a sign of changes to come

They can do that in a week or even less. There's been plenty of rooms that closed with just like a week's worth of notice where they gave away their jackpot money in hourly drawings or high hands or something.

I don't know why any rooms would be closed in the middle of the WSOP though. The time to close a room is in July after the WSOP if that's what they want to do.

Parking will cost $10 or more at some spots near new arena

"Starting with the arena’s debut next week, eventgoers will be charged for “reserved event parking” at garages at New York-New York and Monte Carlo as well as the Aria Event Parking Garage"

^ from the same article

"Registered hotel guests will be able to access the garages by the arena for free, but all others will have to pay for parking from 4 to 11 p.m. on event days, according to Absher."

So maybe guests won't have to pay?

For me, parking fees + resort fees + early checkin fees = Zero tips for anything. I know that's petty and I don't like it but the casino industry started the pettiness with the nickel and diming. Anyone else feel the same? Sorry billion dollar industry but you can pay your own employees now.

Who in the world is going to toke a valet after paying $30?

I imagine if Vegas were booming there would be continued construction and expansion and no resort would even bother with collecting parking fees.

But the above is obviously not the case, so the natural progression is the nickle and dime strategy, until there are no nickles and dimes left to wring.

It's not that they're "losing" but in business there's nothing more important than Year-Over-Year growth. I've seen & been in positions where your job depended on +YOYG. Best way in their minds to "guarantee" YOYG it to charge for a necessity that everyone is currently getting for free.

It's almost like the cab business in this town, since Uber/Lyft have come into the marketplace, there's been months where the cab companies have been as low as -35% YOYG in ride volume, but they're reporting +YOYG in revenue, because they've jacked up the fare prices again to cover for the loss in rides.

I don't think this is a great idea for the long term, but as soon as one group reports how much "profit" they've made with charging for parking, watch the others follow. If anything, this would probably help the Rideshare/Transportation industries more. It's going to be cheaper to Uber to a casino from an area like Spring Valley or Downtown/NLV than it will be to drive your own car (rental or not) and pay to park.

Who thought it would be less than $10 for self parking? Can't remember the last time I had to pay less than $10 for a day/evening at a paid parking space.

Around where I live, most "event" parking is $20+.
