Excalibur - You can usually find really good rates there and it is very easy to go out front and catch the monorail shuttle to MB. It is a bit of a walk to the convention center once you hit MB but if walking a bit doesn't bother you it is the best option.

Never been to Vegas before. I'm planning a 5, maybe 6 day trip. Will probably only play poker, and hit up the sportsbook. What are the recommended poker rooms? Sportsbooks? What's the deal with drinks? Do you drink free while in the poker room? What about the sportsbook?

Thanks in advance, guys.

This is a hugely subjective question and you shouldn't really trust anyone's opinion. Assuming you're playing 1/2-2/5 NL or 2/4-3/6 LHE, they're spread everywhere, and they're filled with fish everywhere. It's like asking which Playboy model you want to nail: you're not going to go wrong if you want to pick one at random, and ultimately your decision will be filled with various subjective criteria, such as which one is the closest to where you're staying or which ones smell the best. (Poker rooms, I mean - I'm sure all the Playboy models smell nice.)

If you're looking for a specific game, Dynasty compiles a list of what games are being spread at what rooms every few months. The latest one is here. If you want to know about poker room rates and comps and stuff, AllVegasPoker is another great resource. The game list isn't as searchable as Dynasty's list but it's updated very frequently.

You drink for "free" in the sense that you're not charged for the drink but it's appropriate to tip the waitress for bringing it. $1-$2 is standard.

The waitress will come around (albeit infrequently) in the poker room asking for drinks. If you're impatient, you can generally ask the dealer to call for service, although I'm not convinced this actually speeds up the process. I've never tried hunting down a waitress, but that might work too.

You may need to show a betting ticket to be served in the sportsbook; pick a used ticket out of the trash if you're a cheapskate.

Thanks for the response. I should have been more specific. I'll probably only play some 3/6, and maybe a tournament or 2. I just didn't know if there were certain things that set some apart from the others (non-smoking, spacious).

I'll definitely tip the waitress. Was more or less just trying to not spend $8 on a drink.

Look on Dynasty's chart to find 3/6.

Look on AllVegasPoker to find tournaments.

All the poker rooms are non-smoking, but in almost all cases some smoke drifts over from the gaming floor.

Almost all the rooms are relatively spacious because the number of tables is in decline. Aside from the Bellagio (which has always been crowded), all the others are what I'd consider "spacious" on an absolute scale.

You booked the concierge suite, right? The breakfast that comes with that will be in the concierge lounge and is better than a typical continental breakfast. You won't starve.

If you didn't book the concierge suite than I have no idea what you're talking about. They've never given me breakfast otherwise.

You can often find cheaper rates by booking from a hotel promo. There is no play requirements or anything else involved and often you will get a couple of free drinks or buffets included when you book.

Check out the Hotel Deals thread at FatWallet: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/trav...04925/?start=0

Click to the most recent posts for the active deals. The OP on that thread has not been updated in over a year, but tons of people post offers in the thread.

In the pokerroom in Caesars there hangs a painting from Muhammed Ali - not the world famous one with him standing over him opponent but the one with the topdown view of him after winning. A perfect square placed in the diamond shape. Does anyone know the photographer, the title or someone has a link with the JPG?

Maybe it's world famous and I am an idiot but couldn't find it.

Had this last week (assuming concerge and bella upgrade) Served in a separate lounge we had 3 kinds of fresh fruit, 4 juices, decent oatmeal, a variety of teas and coffee. Lounge is on the 23rd flr. with a good western view and you can take your time. Nice snacks in the afternoon, good drinks same time. I paired this package with the poker room discount and it worked out nicely.

Neil Leifer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Leifer

Quote:
Leifer was also known for taking risks. For the 1966 heavyweight title fight between Cleveland Williams and Muhammad Ali, Leifer placed a camera in the rafters of the Houston Astrodome in order to get a shot of the canvas when the victor knocked out his competition. His shot of Ali standing over a defeated Williams has been seen by millions. A year earlier, Leifer was one of the only two photographers with color film in his camera when Ali knocked out Sonny Liston in Lewiston, Maine, and his image of the moment has become not just one of his most famous photos, but one of the most memorable sports photos of all time.
There's a shop at the west side of Caesar's that sells expensive prints of his photos.

Despite the horrible hotel reviews, we are going to stay at Aria Feb 15-18, the wife is not a big gambler and Im wondering what the table limits are like at Aria. She likes playing $5 let it ride while I play poker and I'm wondering if we'll be able to do that at Aria or if we'll have to play somewhere else. So is it so bad at aria yet that $5 tables can be found?
