Where to start. Drove the ball extremely well for me. Had a putt for 99 despite three quads. But really could've gone low. Both the quads on the front could've been par, no worse than bogey. Putted better at times, but got flustered on a few holes and burned a few edges. Iron play, which had been automatic, was surprisingly inconsistent. Just a frustrating day, but I'm going to take it as a positive that a nearly 6800 yard course (very long for me) had me shooting a "bad" 101. On an easier course I think I shoot mid 90's for sure. Did actually make a few putts for a change.
Tomorrow: Rematch. Not all that confident, but if I drive the ball the same as last week, I should break 100. Almost 6,800 is real tough for me, and it's not an easy course anyways, but if I play well off the tee (many forced carries), I can handle it. Gogogogogogo.

I haven't shot a 90 or higher in 5 years but I rarely break 80. Boooooooring.
And here I thought I was the only one.

Friday:103 at Royal Regina Golf Club in SK. Wow, that's a big number.

Saturday: 84 at Deer Valley. If you find yourself in Regina--and I highly recommend you don't--this is a really nice course.

84 Saturday, 86 Sunday. Moved back one set of tees for Sunday.

If I weren't putting better than usual things would be ugly. Experiencing swing issues with the driver (all hooks all the time) and the bunkers are killing me - each one is at least two shots dropped. Can't even hit the green coming out (either fluffed or skulled every time).

Sunday, May 4
TPC Canyon Blue Tees

88

Another week of no practice time and it showed. I really felt that my swing was in better shape than this while warming up on the range, but things deteriorated quickly once I actually got onto the course. I'm so far from my competitive best that it's hard to believe I was ever really there. I was hoping to play a few USGA qualifiers this summer but I just don't think I have the fire and the passion any more.

One step at a time I suppose. Goal for the week is 4 hours of quality practice before Sunday's round.

First hole today...

A playing partner is in the trees right on the first hole. He is hitting 3-wood from the light rough. It looks like plenty of room through the two trees in front of him and he has a full swing.

Then the unnerving sound of two hits in rapid succession.

The ball came across the front of my face at eye level missing me by less than a foot, maybe only six inches. Holy ****! I was standing in the fairway behind the guy and his ball ends up across the fairway in the trees on the other side. <heart pounding>

Belated post regarding last weeks league match (I don't have enough time to play full rounds anymore ). Buddy and I play in a weekly league where the game is 2-man scramble match play. Six weeks of regular play within one of four brackets, followed by two weeks of playoffs. For the playoffs, each team receives a seed based on regular weeks play; first week of playoffs counts as semi-finals, followed by finals. Each seed winner receives the same prize (i.e., the winner of the one seeds receives the same prize as the winner of the six seeds).

Partner and I are already on golf tilt for failing to secure the one seed. We lost two key matches where a sub had to play for one of us, including what would be the tie breaker match against the one seed in our bracket. Last wednesday we managed to shoot ourselves into the consoliation match for the TWO seeds.

Well, part of it was us playing crappy, the other part was the other team making a few incredible shots. Shot #1: sank a 20 foot, multi-break putt for birdie when we were unable to convert to draw even on the fifth hole. They then pulled ahead by one when we both hit a shot in the water on the next hole. Shot #2: made a chip from across the green to birdie the par 3 8th. We were in position to easily birdie, and did so, but it was to keep the match alive rather than pull even. Shot #3: we are sitting in the middle of the fairway 20 yards short of the ninth green; they are 130 yards, way right, with trees blocking their shot to an elevated green. First guy (the most solid of the two) hits his shot into a bunker across the green. Second guy, a kid who has no touch and swings out of his ass, hits it between the tree branches to five feet. Deflated, we have to play for broke just to give ourselves a chance, and we both hit short enough for the ball to roll back.

Cliff notes: my partner and I suck at golf.

Sounds like a fun league idea though, 2 man scramble match play.

38-36 - 74 (+3)

Could not strike the ball well on the front, had to use short game to save most holes, plus missed out on easy birdie hole.

Back nine, I was on for the first time all season long, 8 of 9 greens, unfortunately missed to makeable birdie putts on 10 and 11, birdied 12 and 15, but doubled 16 to take me back to even for the backside.

I have recently switched from the vardon grip back to the ole 10 finger approach, it might work better for me than i thought

It's a great league. During the preliminary weeks you play a match against the twoesome you are playing with, and another match against another "ghost" team's scorecard. First week we won 5-4 but had no idea how we were doing against the other team.

woes continue.

56 on the front nine of a course where I shot 99 a month ago. one bit of excuse, I did not practice and had a loaner bag of clubs that had a putter, SW, PW, 7i, 5i, 4i, 3i, some kind of 19* iron with a flex shaft, 3w, and driver (didn't try it), all from about 20 years ago.

i decided to play in an alternating fashion. on holes 1, 3, 5, and 9, i'd hit the 3w and see what's up, and the other holes i would try to do without anything above the 7i. result, +13 with the 3w, +7 on the rest. clearly, not ready for the long clubs.

Same config Monday for work outing. 96. Ugh. Turned two half-wedges into decel-shanks. Double-ugh. Both were on par-5's. Triple-ugh.

I've been the worlds worst golfer for the past 8 years.

I've gone 3-4 times a summer each year with absolutely no improvement. I regularly hit 120 - yes, embarassing. What I've found weird is that I'm an athletic person who plays basketball, tennis, and bikes regularly. I figured that my mechanics and fundamentals are non-existant due to never having lessons or playing with anyone who can break 100.

So I decided to get some lessons. I spent 30 minutes today with an instructor. He pointed out 4-5 things I need to be doing and within 10 minutes I was destroying the ball. I was hitting dozens, literally dozens of solid shots that didn't fade or slice. I always knew I could be a good golfer and my short game is much better than my horrid iron and driving game. I literally can not wait to try this new stroke out on the course. I have a feeling I may drop 100 within 2-3 tries

Disappointing round today.

I hit 9 of 13 fairways and shot a fat 85!

It was windy and I was off with the short game. One of my missed fairways was a shot I sailed OB. I skulled an 80 yard wedge into ankle high rough over another green. Also missed four putts under 5 feet. Bleh.

I take away good feelings from this round somehow.

46 (par 35). WTF. Completely lost all ability to hit a golf ball & had five or six duffs. I never do that.

It's too bad my home course has a lot of trees. I had a little extra adrenaline going on my tee shot on the last hole. I made a horrible swing, caught it way out on the toe, flipped the face shut and hit what would have been an epic boomerang hook - 100 yards of right to left movement - but it got batted down.

Do you do this even on very long putts? My friend swears by this technique, and his results are okay, though he usually has at least one mis-strike per round. I just can't get used to it when I try it at anything over 5-6 feet (when both the ball and hole are in my field of vision).
