First real round of the year:

Fairly tough course that I've never played before, measures 6950 yards and I shot a 45-39-84. I started out terribly, but the front is much tougher than the back, and the toughest holes were straight into the wind. Started out double-bogey-triple and recovered well, then had 3 bogeys and 6 pars on the back.

First round of the year, no practice AT ALL. The first ball I've hit in '08 was off the first tee today. No mulligans, no birdies, 2 stupid 3 putts from inside 20 feet -----> 76.

The rest of my season will be me slowly declining while over analysing the **** out of my swing to the point where I can't make solid contact anymore. Then, towards the end of the season in like October or something I'll finally put it all together and shoot like even par just as the weather gets real bad and stays bad.

Seems like every year when I go out for a round with absolutely ZERO expectations and 8 months of rust I shoot lights out. Funny game this golf.

Course had our first MGA scramble last night, won closest to the pin on number 3 for $55.

Beat: Team only shot 4 under and lost by 4

Brag: Used a lot of my shots

Beat: Probably why we only shot 4 under....lol

Seems like every course has one of these guys...It also depends on the course rating as to what the requirements are, when I took it you had to have aggregate 150 or lower for 36. That was the hardest part was walking 36 in one day for me, luckily I had a buddy carry the clubs for me.

Yesterday I played my first full round of the year with my Head Pro. Ended up with a 76 with a triple on 16 (par ****ing 3). I think its safe to say that may be the first time I have ever gone OB on a par 3. Needless to say my boss birdied 17 and 18 for 71 and I lost $30.

Missed literally 5 putts inside of 18 inches. A few inexplicable holes. Other than that played well, including three really big drives for me.

Damn dude, the putting needs serious work. Do you count putts from just off the green?

lol....I went OB on a par 3 in my "state" tournament and I yelled "god damnit" and threw my club and I turn around and my principal, athletic director, and all american badass marine golf coach are all standing there looking at me. It was pretty embarrassing, but then I hit my 3rd shot to 5 feet, so that felt good I guess. Oh and my fiancee finished off a 70 that day to win her side of the tournament by like 36 shots.

Anyway, dropped a nice little 44-42=86 today. It wasn't really that bad though....my home course has tiny greens and is very narrow, and the wind was 35 mph, gusting to 50 maybe. It was a very tough day. I had two ******ed 3 putts and made 3 stupid decisions that led to me hitting trees and going backwards. Also I hit a few perfect shots that ended up very bad because the wind raped them. I did make a 30 foot birdie from the fringe, so that felt good.

44 on the front of a fairly tough course today.

My driver is on fire right now but my short irons and wedges need serious work. 3/9 holes I was 120 or less away and missed the green. It's still very early in the year for me though, and I expect my irons to pick up as I start playing a lot more.

If it's literally a few inches off *and* not far from the hole, yes. Otherwise no. Usually like 2-3 of these a round.

eh, i think you should be strict that if you are off the green, you are off, and if you are on you are on. If you blade the ball onto the green 65 feet away, i bet you still check it off as a green hit, no? ....it really doesn't make much of a difference though anyway.

Yeah, this definitely goes a long way towards explaining your putting numbers. Everyone has a few putts per round where they are just off the green, even the pros and they don't count them as putts either.

I understand that it feels like you're practically cheating for yourself when you have a 15 footer 3 inches off the green from a tight fringe and you hit 2 putts but count it as a 1-putt; but it is, and you should.

If it counts as a 1-putt for the best players in the world, it should count for you too. Averaging over 40 putts/round is madness.

86. Went 10 holes with no big numbers, then put up a triple and 3 doubles on the last 8. Looks like I shaved a stroke off my index though. 15 now, hopefully 12 by end of summer.

Durango Hills with the g/f. Putted for an hour before the round and made 3 minor changes. Interlocked my grip instead of overlap, tried to stand up straighter, and really focused on lining the ball up with the line in the putter (I think I usually line up that line on the inside 40%.). Putted much better today. Still missing some, but made a few others as well. Really confident. Using my "old" putt scoring method it would've been 33 (2 putts were just off the green), but either way a huge improvement. Even on a course with only four par 4's, +11 is still a good score for me for 18, especially since my putting wasn't an abomination.

Tomorrow: TPC Canyons. We'll see how that goes. Please to break 100.

I hear you man, but averaging even over 36 putts is very, very bad. So don't sweat it.

Putting tip from Tiger:

Quote:
I once asked Ben Crenshaw, who may be the greatest putter of all time, how tightly he held the putter. Ben said he gripped his putter so lightly it almost fell from his hands: "The lighter you hold it, the better you'll be able to feel the weight of the putterhead at the other end of the shaft."
After hearing that, I committed myself to easing my grip pressure -- and it really paid off. On a scale of 1 to 10, my grip pressure is about a 5. That may be tighter than Ben holds his putter, but it's pretty light for me and I do have an increased sense of feel.
If you're having trouble on lag putts, or if your speed isn't right on shorter, breaking putts, or if you feel you're manipulating the putter, check your grip pressure.
I obviously have no idea if you have this problem or not, but I know anytime I get in a putting rut, remembering this usually gets me right out of it.

89. One of those days where you have no idea where the ball is going - and the 45 degree temps with 20+ mph cold wind didn't help any.

Brag: Best round of the last three years.
Beat: 107, 13 strokes above my handicap.
Variance: getting there, having only played 8 rounds the last three years, 6 of those this year.

My iron play is short but dependable, my woods/driver are getting better. I'm getting to know what I am doing.

80 on kinda crappy muni around me (6550 from the back tees, 71.4 rating, 119 slope) I hit the ball ok, iron game needs some work.

I went to get a new driver, ended up getting a new driver and a new swing. I was getting fitted and was getting really low numbers with my club head speed to ball speed ratio. The employee that was fitting me found out that rather than hinging my wrists up, I was hinging them back, forcing me to come over the top and hit a terrible slice. I'm now hinging my wrists the right way, and it's helping my game immensly, especially off the tee.

As for the driver, I ended up getting a Callaway FT-5 Tour with a heavy extra-stiff shaft. I have a fast swing, but it was out of control, so this will help me control the swing and still allow me to get good club head speed. (I was measured around 110 mph when I was swinging for the fitting).

Where to start. Drove the ball extremely well for me. Had a putt for 99 despite three quads. But really could've gone low. Both the quads on the front could've been par, no worse than bogey. Putted better at times, but got flustered on a few holes and burned a few edges. Iron play, which had been automatic, was surprisingly inconsistent. Just a frustrating day, but I'm going to take it as a positive that a nearly 6800 yard course (very long for me) had me shooting a "bad" 101. On an easier course I think I shoot mid 90's for sure. Did actually make a few putts for a change.
