We don't have handicaps, but those sound fun. Wolf also sounds pretty balanced

the foursome splits in to two teams determined by random draw. it's a net game so one twosome is usually giving the other side strokes (add up the HCs for each team and the difference are the strokes given).

the jist: the team with the best of the two low scores on each hole gets a point, the team with the best of the two high scores on each hole gets a point, and strokes can only be applied to the high score. i.e team 1 scores are 4 and 6, team 2 scores are 3 and 7. team 2 wins the low 3-4 and team 1 wins the high 6-7 unless team 2 gets a stroke to tie the high.

extra points are given on each hole for birdies, two for an eagle, one for a sandy par (sand save from a greenside bunker), one for a chip in (including a putt from off the green), one for a KP on par 3s (but you have to make par or better). sometimes we'll give a point for making par or better after being in a fairway bunker (sandzie) or may even give a point for a barkie (par or better after hitting a tree).

we usually keep things casual and play for $1 a point. the winning twosome buys the losers the first round.
I like that

Yeah, we call it Kansas City. Low ball wins a point, high ball loses a point. Go up 3 points you win.

Certain things bump up the bet. Say you play for $5 and $2 bumps. Bumps are birdies, lead changes, every 3 holes.

So if you're match goes 9 holes with 4 birdies and a lead change, you'd win/lose $21.

When I played regularly in foursomes, we played Low-Total for $1 a point. As you guessed, 1-pt for the low on a hole; 1-pt for the total on that hole. Birdies were 1, eagles were 3, sandies were 1, greenies were 1 (and carried over if not won).

We had a clause that if everyone played like crap for the first 4/5 holes, we'd switch to a 2-man scramble. Mind you, I was a 6 at the time and the worst golfer in the group.

Wolf was great, too. ❤️

If you were a 6 and were the worst... Define played like crap. Is that like if everyone started off with all pars? 😆

We played bingo, bango for very small stakes. Nobody else played it before and they didn't want to lose too much. We all had similar point totals and didn't even bother paying out.

Wolf next time.

Played like crap was "2 or more were playing bogey golf through 4 or 5" and the mood just wasn't there.

Three of the guys played at a local college, while the other three of us were just pretty good. We rotated based on working schedules. It was fun.

Edit: Two of the guys later went on to set the course record for where we worked.

just a loose schedule is fine, he's flexible and will adjust the timing as needed once it gets closer. plus he'll probably email reminder you prior too so we'll all remember.

you guys are ***** killing me. you realize i am trying to give away a free lesson with a PRO right?

he just told me that once again, nobody has used this lesson up. He was fairly slammed after the move to his new facility as HEAD PRO, but is schedule is pretty open right now so...

THIS IS ONCE AGAIN UP FOR GRABS.

PM or post to me if you would like a FREE, 1 hour lesson with a HEAD PRO from the comfort of your own home or driving range if you prefer.

The only cost is to come back here and tell me what you though, good or bad.

lol, let's do this!....again.

i should also clarify, this would be good for *any* skill level. We have people on the sim tour that have played high level college golf as well as a guy that was on one of the mini tours, all the way down to garage hackers and Shane has worked with them all and they all come back with extremely positive feedback.

Definitely appreciate the offer Thinman. Right now I'm working with a coach and like the track I'm on so I don't want to mix in other advice at the moment.

Golf is weird. I went a decade or more without carrying a fairway wood, never could find one that I could hit consistently (or, in many cases, at all). Now, all of a sudden, I have two in my bag and they are far and away my most consistent clubs. I may as well look on eBay for 5 and 7 woods and go full old man golf.

A little bummed that when handicaps update tomorrow my multi-year run as a single digit will come to an end. Got as low as a 5.8 iirc, now more that five shots worse. I've earned every one of those additional shots with awful play* this year -- less time to play and more travel/unfamiliar courses are factors.

* except with the 3 woods ldo.

Old man golf is underrated. I have a 3w and 2 hybrids, highest iron is a 5. Handicap moving from 0 to 1 on this revision mostly because I had some low rounds that are dropping out.

exact same for me. at one point i carried a 2h & 3h and ditched the 3w cause i just couldnt hit it off a tee or off the deck. the only fairway i carry now is a 3w but that club is one of the best i hit off a tee or off the deck.

I can't stand these windshields that are on the golf carts these days. It makes it hard to find the golf ball if you don't hit the fairway. Even when the glass is folded down it's not much easier.

as per FW and hybrids and passage of time, i would say people's swings change in small ways that can affect your choice.

i'm never been much of a hybrid player. i am old enough that i'm pre-hybrid. to some degree, i think it's personal enjoyment. for whatever reason, i don't enjoy hitting hybrid that much. if i was playing seriously for score, i might think of hitting alot of hybrids.

anyway, FW vs hybrid segues perfectly into my next comments.

so happy for nate lashley.

looking at nate's WITB, he is using a 7w. not sure i've ever seen that in WITB before. i believe vijay played one.

thought nate had a very loose swing, but it worked for him

Nate's story is a good one! I'm glad to see golf back in Michigan, but that course looked awfully boring.... So boring in fact that I really couldn't watch it.

i sometimes worry that i'm a misogynist or racist as i find LPGA boring (bland?)

but i'm starting to find the same thing with non-major PGA tour... probably just me personally, but i do like the traditional early part of year from hawaii and california. of course i know the courses generally

i agree old man golf is underrated.

LPGA WITB is just littered with fairway woods and hybrids.

and unless you are young and/or elite golfer, we should probably be playing much closer to what LPGA players use.

i've been thinking about PGA WITB.... and here's what i've found.

all players have driver, putter, 5-pw and at least 2 wedges.. so that's 10 clubs

most players have 3wood and 3rd wedge so that's 12 clubs

so that usually leaves 4 iron and lowish hybrid to get to 14 clubs.

some go down to 3 iron... and they'd usually take out lowish hybrid.

so lowish hybrid vs. 3 iron seems to be the big choice...

not sure how new driving irons affect this.

I noticed the 7w on the WITB also, but then I saw it listed as 20 deg. In the 90's at least that was always a 5w. So I think he actually has driver, 3w, 5w, which makes sense.

I've been carrying 2 hybrids for a long time, but I'm considering dropping one and trying a 5w.

My set is D, 4W (16 degree though), 3i-PW, GW, SW, LW, putter. For someone shooting in the high 80's I maybe should be using some hybrid or fairway wood extra in there somewhere but I do enjoy hitting 3i off tees and strike my irons pretty well. Sick brags: hit a 261y 3 iron off the tee on Saturday, landed on a downslope but probably carried 230y. It's my accuracy and short game/putting that costs me rather than average strike so I'm not sure really. Would hybrid be more accurate than 3i? Would a 5w give me more utility? I would loathe to get rid of GW too as my SW carries about 110 and PW 135-140. Big gap there. I'm only getting back into golf after a long long break so tbh I'll see how it goes for a while first before experimenting too much. Way too much improvement out there with some basic easily practiced stuff.

Hybrids are just easier to hit. Easier to get in the air and they make the ball fly higher. All of this makes them more accurate for the average golfer.
