Hey random (and general) question about equipment, for the past few years I have been using like 10 year old irons that are hand-me-downs from my dad, not bad clubs but certainly not top of the line. If I go spend like $800-$1000 on a new set, how much of a difference do you think I will notice? Also what if I get fitted? Just wondering how much equipment has changed in the last 10-12 years. Fwiw I'm a 17 handicap.

**** yes! Just won an eBay auction for this set of irons. Good bye 2003 big berthas! Might need to get clubs fitted, but it will end up costing 2-300 less than retail hopefully when all is said and done.

There's one in MN I know of. Never played it, though. It's only 620. I've played par 5's longer than that.

715 yard par 6 http://www.theinternational.com/club...GRP=8211&NS=PG

277 yard par 3 http://www.theinternational.com/club...GRP=8211&NS=PG

500 yard par 4s are not that rare in Tour events but i've never seen a 270 yard par 3 or 700 yard hole on Tour and they usually don't play courses that are more than 7500ish yards

they made that one par 3 a few years ago 300 on Sunday if I remember correctly. Don't think there's been a 700 par 5 yet.

Also, there has been a 663 yard par 5 at kapalua, 665 yard par 5 at La Cantera, and 667 yarder at Firestone. Which are obviously crazier than a 700 yard par 6

Very, very little downhill. The only saving grace is that there is a huge landing area short of the green with a slight downslope that if you can draw it a bit and miss the left bunker that starts about 40 short you can bounce it up on the surface. The one time I played it was about 280, and I hit a hook 3 wood that hit about 20 short and rolled over the back.

Yeah and Oakmont almost always plays hard and fast. It's still a beast but it's a lot more reachable than it sounds

My Dad marshalled that hole in the '07 Open

mehhh I hit gap wedge twice this weekend into the 672 yarder at my club. Didn't even have to lay up with a 3 wood....just a 5 wood.

Has anyone been to Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, La Costa in Carlsbad, The Homestead in Virginia, or Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage?

I just joined a local Clubcorp club and have an offer to do 4 days/3 nights lodging + 3 days unlimited golf for $500 at any of them. Thought it sounded like it might be a good deal for the $$$ but I have no idea about these courses. Also no one else I know would go with me and pay full price and I'm not sure if doing a golf trip by myself would be awful or if I'd end up getting paired up and meeting fun people or whatever.

All are great but I would choose Barton Creek last.

I almost did a getaway last year to Barton Creek. IIRC their course fee was like $200 for guests. We ended up doing something a lot cheaper. That coupon sounds like a good deal but I've never been there. Ship, what were the negatives of Barton Creek? Love that part of Austin.

Pfft. This doesn't come close to telling the whole story.

The 18th at Kapalua mentioned above is reachable for everybody in the field as it's something like 200 feet downhill!

A lot of holes the actual yardage means nothing, it's all about how it plays.

At a college tournament in Hawaii ~1991 there was a 600+ par 5 I reached with a driver and a 4-iron. Sounds weird right? But then I mention it was downhill, down tradewind, with rock hard fairways.

Sunday I crushed driver off a 426 yard par 4 and had 4-hybrid in. Later in the round I crushed driver off a 510 yard par 5 and had 9-iron in.

Yardage means (basically) nothing.
