not seeing a lot of WIM here

until that one

Naturally, all I needed to win 146 player Fantasy group for the week was any result other than Holmes winning
02-08-2015 , 07:53 PM
if i was playing this hole with this pin location and wind i'd probably putt it up the fairway.

edit: fit shot, that.

English putt was dead center

I know BO will take umbrage, but how do you come up short on a putt to stay alive in a sudden death playoff.
02-08-2015 , 08:03 PM
that was pretty money

Sigh had JB Holmes at 150 to 1

Did not sacrifice a little equity for the hedge on the 2nd playoff hole. Doh

loved J.B.'s layup on 18 in regulation

NXT loved it more

Lol. I just kept waiting for him to hit knowing he could seal it if he hit a good one, then he pulled 8 iron or whatever the f club he layed up with and I could hear my equity plummeting.

No brainer go for it. Not even close

3 iron, downhill lie, nowhere good to bail out? thought it was close

That 18th has seen a LOT of swings over the years. A really great hole design.

I don't know how steep the downhill lie is, maybe it's pretty bad or his lie wasnt particularly good. Off a slight downhill I gotta assume that 230 to cover water into a little wind is a solid 3 iron for him. Just aim a bit right of the flag and rip it.

Don't know JBs wedge stats but I gotta assume that is not a strength of his game so not really great to be conservative and leave it up to that.

Looking at strokes gained from 235 in the fairway it takes on average 3.42 shots to hole out.

JB layed up to 82 yds away, from there it takes 2.76 shots to hole out.

So 3.42 - 2.76 - 1 (the shot it took to get from point A to point B) = -.34

Not a perfect calculation because of hazard implications but I would assume he cost himself at least .2 shots by laying up.

Cliff notes: He made a mistake under pressure. That's what peeps do.

Both JB's wedges were pretty good shots though. I think the one in regulation he hit really well and near where he wanted and was surprised it didn't come back. The one in the playoff he compensated and hit a great shot.

And he had hit some pretty terrible shots from greenside bunkers on the back nine. No guarantee he gets inside of where his wedge was if he ends up over the back of the green or in the traps on either side.

I still this he probably should have gone for it but it wasn't a terrible decision.

And by making bird he avoids a 4 way playoff, right?
02-09-2015 , 12:49 AM
I feel like that's a tough strokes gained spot to calculate. I was for the lay-up especially after he essentially got iced by waiting 5+ minutes in the fairway which I think tips the scales for me.

Plus he's taking 6 out of play laying up which should be factored in. Day was incredibly lucky to make five from where his 2nd ended up. Granted JB rarely gets that bad a lie but people are acting like he makes four a ton more going for it and I don't think that's the case. He essentially had a bottom ~20% result (guessing here) on that wedge shot and still left himself a makable putt for the win.

Also if he carries a five wood or hybrid over the 3i then it tips my decision back to going for it but I think this was a case of not having a club in the bag for the called upon shot.
