so with what i'm reading..
it looks like they want to bump up the annual rent fee from ~4000€ to 12,000€ ...
if that's implemented, and it looks like it has a good chance, would an american still qualify w/ roommates whose rent was 12k€ or would it mean each person has to pay 12k€ in rent?

it's easy to get something for 90 days but it's shortterm and therefore you will pay between 40 an 70% more for the place then u would pay when u take it for 6 months (per month obv)

Im moving to Malta with my girlfriend.
What are the most important things we should take care of before or early when there?

So far i've been told to get electricity set up with domestic rates instead of residential
Any pointers/helpers will be appreciated

FOR AMERICANS trying to move here: In order to set up a bank account here you have to have a bank reference from your bank in the States. So in order to save yourself some time you should contact a bank here and explain the situation so that they can send a letter to your bank and get the bank reference so that by the time you get here you can get it immediately instead of waiting 2-3 weeks

Also, there will be an available room for rent in my appartment between end of may and end of june. (like 22nd to 22nd or something like that). If you were planning on coming here for just a month to enjoy the great summer or want a room in a really nice place you should consider it, because you will get a way better price then you could get anywhere for what it is for a short stay.

It's a 4 bedroom penthouse in Sliema, right next to the ocean, close to the shopping area, a few minutes away from the nightlife, with 2 balconies, one big one with ocean view, jacuzzi and Barbecue. Price would be approximately 1k euros a month, could be a little more or less dpendeing what room you end up getting.

If you want more details or wanna see some pics PM me your skype, AIM or msn.

Malta is member of the EU, so there is no such thing. You can stay for 3 months and then you have to leave Europe for 3 months before you can come back. The alternative is to obtain residency, which was easier in Malta than any other EU country until December when they suspended the program. Word on the street is that it was suspended because someone took advantage of the health care system for a bunch of money and they are implementing new guidelines to prevent that before they open it up again. Nevertheless, it is suspended right now so nobody can get residency.

That's for non EU citizens only right? I'm from Norway, and am moving to malta june 1st and am planning on getting a temporary residency (think that's what it's called, not entirely sure in english), is that still possible?

Just looking for the reaction of someone who moved to Malta and how their opinion of the place changed over time (i.e. can you get burned out, bored, etc). Also what are the restaurants like in Malta, does anything deliver? Do they have any malls or something comparable?

I think it's quite easy to get bored with Malta if you just stay there since it's so small, but you can easily travel for a few days to any destination in Europe & North Africa to fight this.

Tons of restaurants deliver, no worry at all in that regard.

As far as malls are concerned, there are some, but they are probably much much smaller that what you're used to. "The Point", in Sliema, is the biggest and most modern by quite a margin afaik (http://malta.cc/shopping/the-point-s...-centre-malta/).

i had no probz so far with melita this year but when u play high stakes, esp. sngs and mtts a backup stick is mandatory and even some generator who can produce electricity for a couple of hours is kind of reasonable...

Can anyone give me a few pointers on how I set up a limited company here in Malta. I have an accountant friend from another EU country who will do all the paperwork for free but I dont know where to start with getting said paperwork.

Also how much would it cost and what is the most tax efficient way to set it up. Any help appreciated.

Cheers

for EU expats
for NON-EU expats

fwiw

EDIT: so after a lil digging i've found that in order to open a bank account you need to have an ID card... to get the ID card you need to be a resident... there are three different resident permits... (Tourist/Ordinary/Permanent) the Permanent Resident Scheme has been suspended... still.. but ordinary residence is still available ---->though, "The issue of Ordinary Residence Permits to Non-EU nationals is at the authority's discretion" ...
also you need to qualify for one of these in order to obtain it:
Quote:
o Employment
o Self-employment
o Health reasons
o Economic self-sufficiency
o Retirement
o Study
o Family Reunification
o Long-term residence
o Partner
o Exemption under national legislation
o Other reasons

'economic self-sufficiency' is a hope/possibility..
