I'm due to go to Thailand in 10 days for 2 weeks.

I've had my vaccinations but I'm unsure what to do about Malaria, the nurse said the places I'd be visiting are low risk and it should be fine (BKK, Phuket and a few other islands in the south). However my mates nurse said he should take some tablets which are like £60.

Yes I've googled it so before you people jump on that bandwagon I'd just like some advice from people actually in Thailand atm.

Thx

This!

I heard the docs usually wants to sell you more than necessary. But I heard Hepatite A is good to take vaccination against. Also B if you want to be really careful.

I'd like to hear more about this and about Malaria from guys already there.

Taking malaria pills is totally unnecessary for those areas. I understand the side effects are usually very unpleasant.

Have you aquired a visa allready? If not, you should probably check in using your European passport, due to the visa excempt rule. Or maybe Brazil have some similar treaty?

I would recommend 3BB as basic intenet, and then some USB aircard as backup (especially if you play MTT/SNG).

I would book a ticket before you leave via www.airasia.com , otherwise you might get a long wait. Be adviced that Bangkok have 2 different airports, you'll be arriving at Suvarnabhumi, so need an outgoing flight from same.

Have you got your vaccinations/shots?

Be carefull of the girls Otherwise, just behave yourself, and always get a fixed price when you take a taxi/tuk-tuk on Phuket.

Oh, you havent booked a house yet? 4br house 40k baht ($1300) and up, depending on how luxurious you want it. (meh, probably 50k and up)

Does $2k include money for rent? Otherwise beer costs $2-$5, food from $6 (good thai-dish) to $30 (good steak) (of course, there are also much more expensive places), bringing home a working girl like $60. So whether $2k is enough depends on your wants and lifestyle.

If you bring a lot of money, I would open a bank account, and deposit it, as not to have it lying around.

Others will probably chime in as well.

I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know where I could trade the USD-THB currency pairs? Basically I want to hedge my USD bankroll against currency fluctuations but nowhere offers the Baht. Spread betting and forex would both be ok.

gymn and pool would be nice though.

max we would want to spend on rent is like 20k a month but less if obv cool also.

I already know of 9apartment and mrroomfinder for cheap apartments, but I know nothing

fwiw "good" for us doesnt really mean touristy/redlight district,
but we would like to eat out a lot, have malls and good transportation opportunities nearby.

thanks for any help!
i'd go with on nut i think. close to tesco, restaurants, and bts. apartments are cheap there too. plus you're only a few bts stops from emporium, thonglor, etc.

healthcare is expensive here without insurance (though i guess not by US standards)!

i went to the doctor here for an ear infection and paid >6k bhat for a half hour visit + antibiotics and random meds.

also i've had such bad experiences with wi-fi on the islands...on koh phi phi there was something like one satellite for the whole island (could be BS) and here on koh samui it's slow as hell.

in phuket and bangkok internet was A++ though

Thanks, will tell my other friends about that internet thing, since we all play sng/mtts.
Thanks for the website, already booked.
Well, im born in Brazil and took all the vacinations there. I dont think I got any malaria one.I dont even knowed I needed those vacinations.my brother went from brazil to thailand past year and no one asked anything neither.

The guys are already at phuket, so they r searching for a house before I arrive.
The money isnt really a problem, so will prob bring a bit more than 2k based on what u said.tnx

i am probally going with a few euros for eating/buying stuffs while in airports, but most part of the money will keep in travel cards(western union) I think.

Where can I locate other people living around phuket?

Yeh seems like you well overpaid just for a doctors consultation and some meds. I broke my ankle playing football and was in hospital half a day seeing numours doctors, got an x-ray, bunch of meds, some crutches and a cast on my leg and the bill came to 2.5k baht. Obv depends which hospital you go to though

edit: My thai friend who took me was still shocked by the price though. She said in a Thai Government hospital it would probably have been less than 1k baht total

As Lessu said, no such treaty. You´ll get one month on arrival as European and can then extand that for 7 days at a cost of 1900 baht.
Suggest you contact the Thai embassy ASAP and ask for a tourist visa.

It´s possible that whatever shots you get in Brazil also covers what you might catch in Thailand. But no harm in asking a doctor.

Where in Phuket do you intend to live? South or northern part?

Yeah, You need some currency or credit card for whatever airports you´re going through.

Just let us know where you stay once you arrive, should be easy to meet other 2+2érs.

Re: surfing only the low season is suitable for it, but just how suitable compared to Indonesia etc I have no idea. Pretty sure the Kalim surfing contest is coming up soon, and Rutang previously mentioned something about an annual event in Kata as far as I recall.

2.5k? I broke my ankle playing football 2 weeks ago and it cost like 15k baht for the x-ray, doctor **** and I even refused the meds.

yeah it was 30.000 baht for me to spend 1 night there and a few pills for a stomach issue. I dont know if they jack up the price when they see you are insured or if that is standard.

15k seems a lot. Granted I'm in CM and things are cheaper here than BKK/PHuket, but I can't see how it can be that much cheaper. I didn't go to the best hospital in CM but its regarded as being in the top 3 for sure.

of course they take more from your insurance

when i had to stay 2 nights in bangkok hospital they said they would charge 10k per night(guess it was max or something) from my insurance but if for some reason my insurnace wouldn't cover the room prices were 2-3k per night for me

2 nights stay cost 63k for my insurance company and the hospital billed them directly so i didn't mind obv
