Also Pokerspiv, you're right my parents prob have seen a condom before, but that doesn't mean they would like one to float past them when they're in the sea on holiday.

you must have never been to times square in the early nineties - probably equally dirty with the same amount of hookers as patong now it's like disneyland

Missing the point as usual. The point is that the degeneracy of the place is in fact part of the reason why people choose to visit it. The same thing for other degen tourist destinations like Las Vegas, The Greek Islands or Bali. Or Times Square when it was degen.

It appeals to peoples' sense of Voyeurism. Watching other tourists behaving badly is part of the attraction.

Now it might turn out that your parents/whoever find the degenaracy really off-putting, and that 1 visit to Patong would be more than enough for them. But when they go back to their boring life in their home country, they will still have a funny story to tell their friends about. And that is a big part of why people travel - to have an experience that they can't have at home.

I lived in NY for a year in the late 90's and I only went to Times Square once. There really wasn't much there that I found very interesting, other parts of Manhattan were much better. But I'm still glad I went there once, I wouldn't have wanted to have missed it.

multiple people have had their moms come visit, and they want to go out and see the ladyboys and talk with the hookers. seems pretty standard. i think i remember about 5 people's parents coming out, and 3 of the 5 wanted to see the degeneracy.

Just don't take them someplace where they know you by name.

WhoIam brings up a good point about a place where the hookers remember you. Unlikely, but I can see the scene playing out of Mom being crushed and dad being like "C'mon Monica what did you expect?"

For patong. I think restaurant, walking the main strip and bouncing. Still if we go into one of those places where the girls try to grab you who gets more action? dad or me? It's probably not close.

My mom when in vegas loved the whole "You think she is a hooker?" game and after a few lemon drops or whatever girly **** she drinks sat next to a group of them and played video poker and talked to some ghetto ass ho's.

My dad when he visited me in sweden was giving the like old-dude eyebrow raise to hot chicks he saw. So they're game but if they start talking with a hooker about the threesome I'll need a lot more than booze and weed to erase that horrific memory.

my dad is smart enough to know that in their hearts all women are hookers, and wouldn't be prejudiced against the ones that go about it honestly.

So putting a fake address is better than just putting no address? I am 21 and white, arriving in Thailand Jan 2nd 2011. The thought of getting asked questions at immigration is pretty scary to me!

An easy way to solve this is to bring a girl along with you.

If you walk down any of these streets with a girl, it is a totally different world. NOT ONE girl will scream hansum man to you, or approach you in any way. You will feel pretty invisible for a change. These girls don't encroach on other girls' business, and they don't see guys with girls as good targets. Even if they know you, they will keep quiet when they see you with someone else.

You probably think most people disagree with him just because a handful post a lot saying so.

Here is one person who agrees 100% with what he says. Even for supposedly conservative Hua Hin, ladyboy cabaret show is considered a general-interest attraction in guidebooks. The crowd is regular mom and pop couples and children too, as well as regular Thais.

i think I remember you telling me that even though it doesn't matter what you put down as occupation it does get put in a database. So you should be consistent if you want to be careful.

Thinking about living in Phuket for a few months.

How much would a decent 1 bedroom apartment with a/c and preferably near the beach cost me roughly?

Does anyone know a good site to find accomidation? That one's ive been to have seemed more expensive than everyone is saying.

to find a cheap 1 br in phuket, you're not going to find it on a website. there are a few apartments online i've seen. bananaface stayed at this one in Karon, which is near the beach

http://www.rattanabeach.com/

10k low season 15k high season.

they have places all over phuket, that's just the one that's closest to a beach, and it's not a bad deal for a place you don't need a contract on. if you want cheaper than that, expect a contract, and no internet webpages to show you the way.

Yeah i stayed at their (rattana) Karon property for a couple of months 9k/month (including power/water) + 800 internet (grindable/torrents/youtube etc)

But that was a special offer until October.

Its about 1 minute walk to the beach which is cool but its a bit klausy in the area. Its like a tamer version of Patong. Its fine for a couple of months but you might get sick of it if you stay any longer - i did.

There are at least 3 poker houses on Samui that I know of, 1 full of Scandis and 1 full of 20-something Australian guys, but nobody from either of these poker houses reads or posts on the travel forum of 2+2 as far as I know. Both of them are in the Bophut/Fisherman's Village area.

The other "poker house" is not really a house but a poster on here "igetjokes" and a few of his friends that each rent an apartment in the same block of apartments in Samui. Either way if he wants to contact you I am sure you would hear from him.

Please remember that randomly contacting other poker players that you don't know and don't have references for is not always the best idea. Especially in Thailand where scammers abound and you have basically no recourse if you do get scammed, because Thai police don't really care about Farang vs Farang issues and will place it in the Som Nom Na files.

does anybody have any recommendations for very nice, delicious, high-quality restaurants in bangkok? obviously there are many...but i'm looking for suggestions that aren't obvious...maybe fancy places that most foreigners wouldn't be "in the know" about. (trying to impress a friend with my stupendous restaurant selection skills ldo.)
