All,

I just saw a good deal for a Thailand trip from smarttours - $1300 for airfare+14 nights.

http://www.smartours.com/thailand.shtml

Can anyone give some feedback on if this looks like a good trip, or what major places I might be missing out on?

One thing I'd like to see is the full moon party, and those islands don't seem to be included.

I'm mostly interested in seeing some cool architecture and being around good nightlife. Definitely NOT interested in any ladyboys or bar girls.

Was your ticket worth $30 or was it $30 for the change of flight?

You can change your 2nd flight on their website for a fee.

extending a visa on arrival is the same price (just under 2k baht) and only gets you 7 days. you can change the flight for less than $30.

that package deal is a lame tour that puts you in hotels you don't want to be in, odds are. also probably has you sharing a room with some total stranger if you go by yourself ... most of those tours are 2 persons/room. just a FYI... i don't know the exact details of your tour, but everyone of those package deals i've heard someone go on, they didn't enjoy it.

have any of you guys been to Macau before? would it be best to exchange baht for HKD somewhere here in BKK or somewhere in Hong Kong/Macau? i tried at Siam Commercial Bank in Paragon but they had about $200us worth...I wasn't able to tell how much they normally have.

It's probably best to change to USD here. and then change to HKD there. Just because the exchange rate changing twice is still better than straight up baht to hkd (or any other currency). i think this is true in most cases.

depends what you what? as mention above the place right by thong lo BTS station is the best imo. i got my teeth cleaned there and it was only 2000 balt. i got a quote for invisableline braces which is $3500USD and if u want vernears its $375US per tooth, i think thats a really good deal cuz i live in canada and they charge 1k+ per tooth

Probably easier to do it there. HKD is an odd/rare currency.

Sounds like you have figured this out but don't take Macau Dollars. Basically same value as HKD but much harder to exchange other places.

kinda silly a guy thinks of renting a room to have sex with a non-hooker!

thailand rocks!

Clearly, I'm only getting a hotel room to **** prossies. Normally I just sleep on the street corner, so this room renting is a major extra expense for me.

Is there a reason every hotel map is completely useless? Scratch that, even the "official" road maps are horribly off. Is it that hard to make an accurate map? Google can do it.

Really bad advice. Definitely do not swap to USD, that is the worst possible idea. You are paying commission every time you swap currencies so more swaps = higher cumulative vig obv.

The rate you will get in Thailand for converting THB to ANY currency would be far better than you will get abroad.

HKD is a huge currency, and hardly rare, if you goto a big money changer instead of a consumer bank you will be fine. If you goto the right places (any of the big commercial non-bank moneychangers) you will pay less than 1% vig, which is a zillion times better than SCB Kassikorn BB or using the ATM etc.

The difference between XE.com rate and most of the money changers for THB to HKD or THB to SGD or THB to USD is <1%. This is because they obviously have great demand for Thai people getting rid of THB for other "harder" currencies.

thanks for the advice. are some of these big money changers at BTS stops, i've noticed quite a few currency exchange shops around various BTSes.

LA is the only one on the west coast. They're very fast with the visa process though

Do I need to go there in person or can I do it over the phone/snail mail? I won't be leaving for at least a couple months fwiw. When you say fast, you mean I can go and do it in 15 minutes, a couple hours, or I need to stay there a few days?

You don't need to go there lol... just go here

download the visa application and fill it out and include all the necessary documents. NO proof of airline tickets is needed
