And the wired internet can be pretty unstable some places because of bad line to the house etc.

True, but Australia is one of the most expensive places in the world to buy liquor. In the US for example a bottle of Smirnoff Red is about $15-20, in Thailand its about $20-24, in Australia its $30-35. (Australian Dollar Conversion)

Man, I look so much forward to travel when I read the prices on liquor in other countries. In Norway a 1L bottle of Smirnoff Red cost around 64$.

I read the fine print of your plan and you are definitely not covered for anything that happens with alcohol involved, so be careful.
thanks,

i dont drink/go out much so doesnt really make a difference in my case

Does anyone know if legally you are meant to have a motorbike licence when driving a scooter in TH. Or is a car licence enough? From memory, the scooters I was driving there were 125cc which (if the laws are the same as my home country) means you need a motorbike licence.

Just wondering because if you have an accident while driving one I'm guessing insurance wont cover you if you are driving without the correct licence?

yes you need a license. either a thai or international one

atleast in phuket if the police stop you at a checkpoint they will let you through when you show any kind of drivers license even if it is not for motorbike (or a student ID card like some ppl show )

And yes I would think the insurance company will be interested in you having a valid license if you get into an accident

questions regarding motorcycle taxis in bangkok:

1) how likely am i to get in a gruesome accident? every time i've ridden one (5 times now) it's been pretty thrilling. it's much more fun than a regular taxi and you don't have to wait in traffic. but, seriously, every time i get to my final destination i feel like i've been lucky not to have scraped a knee on a car or something. anybody ever get a knee scraped on a motorcycle taxi?

2) i've tried to bargain every time i ride one of these. i don't think i'm doing it right, or maybe they just don't like bargaining. today i went to chinatown and the guy quoted me 160. i said "120 baht" and he shook his head and said, "160". of course i was putting on his helmet when i was trying to bargain so he knew he had me. most of their prices seem reasonable - so it's not a huge deal anyways - but i don't exactly know what is reasonable and don't want to be a fish if bargaining is the way to go.

is it correct that when playing c4 if opponent A gets a win spot on his row on one side of the board opponent B can cancel that win spot by gaining one of opponent As win spots on the other side of the board?

I've only been around Nam so far, but...

1) Obviously very rarely. Guys are pros, you know. Hell, even the average person is a pro at this.

2) Before anything, agree to the price, don't physically commit yourself by moving towards them or anything like that, stand in place. Location, price, then get on.

Half the cost of a taxi ride or so should be about right. Not sure about BKK but in Nam it's ~50c per Km, so ~25c per Km or so is about right for motos here, although to save yourself some hassle maybe shoot for 2/3rds for about 35c/Km (saving 20c isn't really worth an extra two minutes of haggling imo).

If you don't like the price, just say you'll take a taxi and start looking down the street. Remind them that taxis are "safe, safe", "air condition", when they start asking why you want take taxi, and start trying to wave taxis down: this gives you super leverage on them and will get them to drop the price very quickly, plus they'll realize they don't have time to pester you perpetually so they'll get to business quickly. And if they don't drop it by the time the taxi gets there, well, there's a hassle-free metered taxi for you at the ready with AC.

They might try to scam you on the other end even if you agree to a price, so make super sure you're clear on what the price is before getting on.

I don't ride motos/cyclos here for two reasons: they scam you a good enough amount of the time to make it too much of an expected pain (less of an issue if you're going back to your hotel since the staff will deter any such bs); I don't like giving the most annoying touts on earth my money (although at least the cyclo guys generally seem nice).

This is not true. There is no easy way to explain it, but you cannot "cancel" a threat once it's created. However, if the player going first creates a relevant threat on the other side after the player going second has created a relevant threat on one side the player going second's threat has been effectively neutralized since the player going first only needs to create one relevant threat in a column where there are no relevant threats from his opposition to win. That could be what you or whoever you were asking for/about was referring too.

Been wanting to get some more info on the "o" immigration 1 year visa to Thailand.

I am a full time poker player, but withdrew separate amounts every month (may not be every month but its about monthly).
If I apply for the 1 year visa, should I say I want to play poker in Thailand? (I know in Thailand gambling is not allowed). I already have a place to stay in Thailand so I was wondering what I should do/say when I make an application.
If not what should I say I am doing in Thailand?
Will they need prove of how I am going to support myself? If so I dont have a great deal amount in my bank, but I have a lot online....

Im very noobish at this sort of thing.

Thanks

P.S on the UK Thai Embassy website it says I need to proof of earning > £14,000 a year. This was only for 1 field though so not sure I need to.

Any help is much appreciated.

You shouldn't even be allowed to board your first flight there without a return ticket or a visa. But with a visa its not an issue

Hi all,

I was told to come here to find some local poker buddies. I'm in Bangkok, this is my 7th trip. I've been here nearly two months now and will be here another month before going back to the UK. I will spend about a month in London then will be back out here again for another 3-4 months. I'm spending most of my time here.

I'm 28, grinding the micros at the moment and currently staying in Bang Kapi (in Bangkok), although i'm searching for a new apartment in a nicer area.

So if anyone is local, it would be great to chat about poker & Thai stuff.

contact the thai consulate in hull. you will get the non immigrant visa from there without proof of money or anything. the other consulates/embassies WILL NOT issue the same visa so dont even try

dont mention poker as gambling is illegal and also you would need a work permit to make money in thailand (or even work anything for free).

if they, for some reason, want proof of money then you would have to get the money out from sites for a while but i dont see that happening.

PM if you need more info

I came to thailand on a VOA and have done the border run to Cambodia twice now, anyone know how many times i'm allowed to do this? Some have told me twice, others have told me three times, other have told me as many times up to 90 days, others have told me unlimited. I've basically had a stamp when i first got here and two other stamps at the Cambodian border. If anyone could shed some light, it would be greatly appreciated!
