The prices are definitely going to be inflated, but you can negotiate the prices down. I would try to figure out where you want to live in BKK first. Maybe come up with a list of values like nightlife, shopping, access to BTS/MRT, or whatever else and people may be able to point you in the right direction.

Grindable internet is first. Access to BTS/MRT would be second. And as good neigbourhood you can get with 150-250 euros a month. Everything after that is a plus.

if it is possible then after you get the line to your house it shouldnt take more than few days to get some guy to connect it. initial fee is around 1000 baht and with that you get the modem too (dont think you own it though). back in karon we had to pay a year in advance, now we got a monthly deal.

depends on who the girl is you are dealing with and her mood whether you get the monthly deal or have to pay in advance
those bastard at 3bb in Karon just want to give me a 1 year contracts deal. First she talked about a promotion with 1 year contract, and two days later I talked to her boss on the phone and she told me 1 year contract with or without promotion. I guess I'll need to try another office

They actually have 3bb where I live now, but the wifi is very weak, so i need to get my own.

Ok a few questions, some of these have probably been already answered, ive read alot of this thread but not all 14k replies. So here goes:

Internet:
I am sure alot of people here play poker, i myself will probably\hopefully be playing, atleast some HUsngs. And if i discoenct there for more than like 1 minute ill be losing it pretty fast. So how much does one have to pay/how does one go about finding a stable internet line? Any information regarding this would be awesome.

Finding a place to stay:

I have read some tips here, the main one being just walk around in the area you want to rent and see if you find something interesting. I have seen some people also say you can hire agencies, any information about this? this would seem like a better idea from all logical points of view atleast. Since first of all, my time is most likely more valueable than some thai persons time (in terms of $obv.) Second of all, he will be able to find stuff faster since he has some idea of what is available where and whatnot, and thirdly he will probably be able to find something more closely to what I Had in mind than myself, and be able to get a better monthly price than me, since he is more experienced with dealing with landlords. Assuming he does a good job for me that is atleast. So wouldnt it then be win/win for both of us if i were to hire someone to find an apartment for me?

Alcohol: What are the prices for alcohol in this country, both if you buy liqour at a store and at bars. I am guessing at stores you can buy local stuff for pretty cheap and brand stuff which is more expensive, so what does like a bottle of smirnoff go for and what does like a bottle of some local helljuice cost? I see some people say you can spend like 100-200$ on a night out, which seems pretty expensive to me, depending on what you are doing obviosuly.

Think that was all for now. Thanks for anyone taking time to reply.

About internet, get a Cat CDMA and bring it with you when you have found a good apartment, if signal is bad you dont take the apartment.

If you are spending 200 bucks out then you are buying a lot of hooker-drinks or bring with you a lot of thai"friends" + hookers. Beer in Bangla Road in Phuket is from 90-150 bath, and I guess this is a very expensive area. 150 baht beer is go go bar btw

with agent you would get a higher price, since he is working to make as much as possible, dont believe he is your friend. Maybe it is best to get a 3 months house deal with the agent, and after you extend without involving the agent.

Cat CMDA? *googles* guessing it is some sort of wifi measurer. Anyway wouldnt wired internet be better or is all you get some sort of shared wifi? Doesnt it also depend alot on what your ISP is \where you live (?) if you get alot of disconects or not?

And yeah if you rent FROM the agency, but i was figuring there might be agencies that just find you an apartment that they are unafiliated with or whatever. I read in some thailand thread (unsure if it was this one), think that was in phuket though, that what the agencies did was get a cut of the first rent, after there it was all between you and the landlord, so they would try to get you a good deal so you would rent something they found you.,

karon is more than 30 mins away. Id say 45-60mins depending on what time you land. it is like 45-50km from the airport and no high ways

you dont need to tip the driver, you can obviously if you want but i think you are already paying a lot for the trip since you prepaid and prebooked it.

if you think the driver deserves a tip i would give 50-100 baht

K thanks, how does it work with the lease? Do they usually have you pay for like six months in advance, or is it one month rent+ a deposit?

I'm not positive what it is for a 6 month lease, but I had to put down 3 months + first month's rent as a deposit when I signed a 1 year lease. There is likely some wiggle room with the size of the deposit, but I'm not totally sure.

The CAT CDMA is recommended because it means you can look for a place to stay based on how nice it is rather than having to value the internet connection more than anything else.

Most places don't have wired internet - they just have wi-fi, and typically the wi-fi is not up to a standard to be able to reliably grind poker.

There are some places that offer great internet but if you have the CDMA option you can stay wherever you like.

Imported alcohol is pretty expensive. A supermarket price for a bottle of something like Smirnoff you are looking at about 700 baht, for something like Jack Daniels closer to 1000 baht. Local rum is like 200 baht for a 750ml bottle.

Most of that cost is just tax, imported liquor is taxed very highly. Thai liquor and beer is extremely cheap because it is manufactured locally and therefore isn't subject to import duties.

Lessu and others just keep in mind with these plans and most health insurance plans, they do not cover you if you have been drinking at the time of injury, which makes them fairly useless for anyone who drinks fairly often imo. As a young guy accidents are your main risk, and accidents are most likely to happen when you have been drinking.

I read the fine print of your plan and you are definitely not covered for anything that happens with alcohol involved, so be careful.

The insurance just cover 50% and maximum 200.000 baht if you are driving a motorcycle. I would think that is the most likely accident a young guy would have in Thailand..
