I think the maid has some weird superstition about the aircon. I leave it on, come home to find she's turned it off, breathing heavy, dripping with sweat. Air conditioners causing health problems seems like something Thais would believe.

Thais also think rain causes colds and flu. They haven't really got their heads around correlation and causation yet.

Air conditioning can make it more likely that you'll catch something in that air conditioning can dry out mucous membranes that are your natural protection against viruses and bacteria. But the virus still has to be present in order for you to catch it.

That's what happens to me. I'll crank up the ac so I can sleep then wake up with incredibly dry nose and sore throat. In china they would always position the ac directly at the bed which is obv stupid.

Put up an obstruction so AC doesn't blow directly onto you and it'll solve most of those problems.

I would usually put something on the vents so the air would blow up to the roof but it was still going to my face.

Probably should have made a tent fort for myself like I was a kid again

We have to keep in mind that thai people were living in mostly jungles and farm land not long ago. Met a old farrang sailorman in phuket and he said it's like 10 years ago i think he said, that most of phuket was just farm land where buffalos wander about.. there was no kata/karon etc. And that's phuket.. it's like the most highest income area in all thailand?? So think about the rest of the country that are not in tourist areas how slowly they are developing. It's completely understandable they have these kind of beliefs then and their non-confrontational ways.. I mean, would you really want to confront people if you know that if he gets angry and attacks you with a machete then what are you gonna do? Hide in your straw/bamboo house? He will hack the door down unless you have a thai boxer as your big bro!

I first went to Koh Samui 25 years ago, in Summer of 1990, and it was nothing, I mean nothing of what it looks like today. In '90 it was still largely a "backpackers" Island and literally a coconut plantation Island. There wasn't even a single paved road in all of Lamai, it was all dirt roads. Of course now Samui has Four Seasons, McDonalds, Starbucks, 7/11's everywhere, etc.etc. So change can happen pretty fast when word spreads quickly and the tourist growth is exponential.

But yeah, LOL at Phuket being buffalo farmland just 10 short years ago, maybe like 30-40 years ago.

I've worn out my tourist entry + extension, how likely is it that I'll face problems if I just fly to another country for a few days and return looking another tourist entry? (Used to do this every month, but it seems they may frown on this now)

if you mean 30 day visa-free entries, you get questioned to show documentation like flight bookings / proof of funds if you do more than 6 in a year

Thinking about taking my honeymoon in Thailand.

Looking for beautiful landscapes, beaches, near some kind of metro area so we have some good food and bars to go out at night.

Not into sex tourism, nightclubs/dancing. We're old people in 30 year old's bodies. What suggestions do you guys have?

I have a vision of going 2-3 places on Phuket, staying 2-3 nights at each place. Want to stay in a sick hotel/villa type place at each stop. Any recommendations on lodging would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to Phuket!

And no, that's not fog, it's smoke, because of Indonesia. They don't seem to care that much, though

Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla rapped neighbouring countries for complaining about the haze, and asked them instead to be grateful for the clean air they enjoy for the rest of the year.

"For 11 months, they enjoyed nice air from Indonesia and they never thanked us," he said.

Damn. I got stung by one as a kid (confirmed box jellyfish by hospital) and survived, was lucky it was on my ankle and had quick acting first aid. If you ever get stung by a jellyfish you need to put vinegar on it asap fyi.
