Some truck drove by the restaurant I was eating in yesterday announcing a kickboxing championship with international contenders and "some of Thailand's best fighters" tonight at 8pm.

I googled it a bit but can't find anything. Anybody in Patts know where this is? Anybody planning on checking it out?

these happen like 3-5 times a week, and are usually rigged. can still be a good time though

For those living in Phuket : be extra careful when using your credit card.
Recently, two friends who were only using their cards to withdraw cash from Rawai's ATMs got their accound sucked dry from Corea and USA (several thousands each).

Apparently there's a skimming scam going around. I just saw this news http://phuketwan.com/tourism/phuket-...ket-atm-16991/ but it may not be the only gang working in phuket.

should be obvious but don't keep lot of money in the account you have debit card for.

i'm assuming every bank lets you have an extra account for free with no debit card attached. just move your money online to the account you have the card for when needed

credit card scams are obv annoying but you won't lose anything as the credit card company will foot the bill.

but in this case as someone's "account was drained" they were using a debit card and in those cases you will lose the money unless your bank refunds you. and even if they do refund you, your money will be unavailable at least for some time

here it's more secure to use ATMs that are attached to a branch of the bank and not those standalones you see everywhere that aren't monitored that well

also keep your hand over the keypad in such a way that it is impossible for any camera to see your pin.

There is no way for you to prove that you didn't take the money yourself, so you won't get anything back.

This is true for both credit and debit cards.

The only time when you can get your money back is for in store and online purchases, but that's also a hassle.

They use keypad duplicates so that won't help.

Just stick to ATMs with skim proof stuff infront of the card slot. UOB mostly uses ATMs with them.

skimmers can work with bartenders to run it twice so just lookout or use credit

Actually there are ways to prove that you didn't. For one thing, a lot of ATMs have security cameras, so they can tell visually if it was you or not.

Secondly, newer credit cards contain a chip inside them which measures how many times they have been used. It is called an Application Transaction Counter (ATC). When a card is skimmed, the skimmers put your CC details into a dummy card and use that instead of your actual credit card. So your CCs Application Transaction Counter will not have increased, which is proof that your card wasn't used to perform the transaction.

It's true though that getting refunded from skimming is a more difficult process than other kinds of credit card fraud.

For those who were asking I checked out the Tony's Lido building. It does in fact include full access to the fitness complex and gym, but that's where the perks end.
Rent is up to 6k/month now with 3k deposit. But electricity is 10/unit and water 30/unit. On top of that the rooms are beyond busto. Tiny cheap motel sized room, dilapidated overall, almost no furniture except a tiny cabinet and a stand for the tv + standard sized bed, no security. Just a lock on your door which is accessible to the street.

The more I look around now, the more I realize what a sick deal I got. Got a decent view, nice sized deck, tons of space, lots of furniture (big cabinet, dresser, desk, chair, king sized bed, 2 bed side tables, huge mirror), key pass entry to secured building, great restaurant right next door, Big C extra 2 blocks away. 7500 baht. 6500 baht if I did 6 months, which I would if my gf wasn't coming in 2-3 months. Obv, gotta get a 1 bdrm (prob apus or KTK) once it's 2 people.
Then only main difference between my room and The Icon Place is I don't have 24/7 security personnel, just the key pass to get into the building. My room is just as nice and I pay over 5kbaht/month less. My Iranian friend hooked me up with this little gem. I also get free maid service every Sunday.

Too early to say that, they sent some letters and are waiting for response from HSBC and neteller. Not sure if one of them is not drawing dead for getting funds back from neteller...

They can prove they pocess the physical card and that they haven't left thailand while the cards were used in korea or USA.

I have no idea about that chip but skimmers tend to use ATMs for skimming that are outdated and don't do certain security checks.

Cameras don't mean **** unless it happens in your home country. I doubt you'd be able to get some notarized document from someone that states that the person in the picture matches a transaction related to your card.

That's the only reasonable proof if they didn't withdraw money from the cards in Thailand, but generally banks like to hardball their customers and tell them it's their fault for using unsafe ATMs / not protecting their PIN etc.

I'm surprised Neteller didn't prevent the transactions from happening though as they're usually pretty anal about country changes.

i think what he meant was that in theory it's possible your friends were on the scam and would get part/all of the money twice

I'm kinda scared about the strays around Ekkamai at night that form a pack and aggressively defend their territory.

I've been lucky so far not to get bitten.

It doesn't matter where it happened, assuming your credit card is from a bank in your home country, the burden of proof rests with them to prove that the transaction was properly authenticated if they want to refuse a refund.
