My NYE **** up:

Ended up booking a harbour fireworks cruise for 4 (myself and my three wives) which should rock.

BUT, completely missed the boat on the fact that Groove Armada is playing Bondi!!!! ARGH!!! Total mess up, as this is where I really want to be.

Oh well. Grandma funk will have to show up another time...

I retract my previous post.

Best NYE I've had since the Dead stopped touring.

Sydney sure knows how to do it up right.

From http://www.amonline.net.au/spiders/r...tm#tarantulas: "There have been no deaths in Australia from a confirmed spider bite since 1979".

Yeah I saw some crazy ass spider last night when putting my laundry on the clothes line. Fortunately, it didn't jump and bite me with its killer venom of death.

Hi! Thanks so much for doing this, I really appreciate it since I am planning on moving to Australia for 6months to a year. I have a question about the healthcare service in Australia. I am diabetic and was wondering if Australia has universal health care like Canada and European countries or if it was more like the U.S. Thanks so much!

Desirae

runningirl,

I think http://www.medicare.gov.au/about/index.shtml has the information you are after.

I would be very surprised if people who were not citizens of Australia or New Zealand were eligible for participation in it.

Australia does have universal health care for its citizens - the scheme is called Medicare. Australia also has reciprocal health care agreements with some countries:

Quote:
Medicare benefits are not available for treatment received overseas, however, the Australian Government has signed Reciprocal Health Care Agreements which means that as an Australian resident your are entitled to assistance with the cost of medical treatment in:

New Zealand
The United Kingdom
The Republic of Ireland
Sweden
The Netherlands
Finland
Italy
Malta
Norway
Australia's Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with these countries cover any medically necessary treatment you require which may arise while in that country.
If you are going to travel overseas anywhere, you would be stupid not to get travel insurance (which can cover medical expenses in the event of an accident or an emergency). DEFINITELY take out travel insurance if you are coming to Australia, it's not worth the risk of travelling without it.

The cost of healthcare here is probably a lot cheaper than the US, but it can certainly add up to thousands of dollars if you have to go to hospital for something bad and you aren't from one of the countries with a reciprocal health care agreement.

Sorry to nitpick but this is not true. You also have to be a permanent resident to qualify. So if your an Australian citizen living abroad planning on going over to Australia for up to only 1 year (and don't have a 1+ year work/accommodation contract) you will not get Medicare.

Just had this question asked on AIM (my aim is "aujoz" if anyone wants to ask anything):

Quote:
Q: Sorry for bugging you, but saw your thread on 2+2 about Austrailia. I have a buddy who is moving there in the near future for work purposes and I was thinking about tagging along with him. I'm interested in moving for at least a year (if I like it longer of course) and would need to get a job. Which Visa would you recommend I try to get to accomplish such a thing? And how is the job market out there? Specifiacally Retail work (my main experience is in working retial and retail management). Thanks for your time
[16:45] auJOZ: gday
[16:45] auJOZ: where are you coming from?
[16:45] Q: US
[16:45] auJOZ: ok
[16:46] auJOZ: firstly, let me preface this: that i am not a migration agent, and that this is not expert advice. if you want expert advice, you need to see a migration agent or similar
[16:46] Q: Right. Just looking for any info so I can have a starting place is all.
[16:46] auJOZ: that said, last year, President Bush and Prime Minister Howard signed a new agreement between Australia and the US
[16:47] auJOZ: for the type of work you suggest to be more accessible
[16:47] auJOZ: if you want work rights
[16:48] auJOZ: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/work.../462/index.htm is likely to offer your best option
[16:48] auJOZ: btw, is it ok for me to post this in the thread?
[16:48] Q: Excellent.
[16:48] auJOZ: i'll remove your name
[16:48] Q: I'll be sure to check that out tomorrow after work
[16:48] Q: Yeah, no prob. Was actually going to post my questions but Decided to see if you were online first

Hey Josem!
Thank you for doing this post!

I intend to go to Australia in july, to start a undergraduate program at University of Queensland.

I am from Brazil, and here i use the Neteller card to cashout my poker earnings. Do you know if it's possible to do that in Australia ?

Will Neteller work normally over there ?

Thank you.

Anecdotally: I have a neteller card and have used it fine in the past.

More broadly: Some people have reported that Neteller lock accounts that are used in different locations, so I suggest that you email Neteller when you move/visit overseas.

More info on Australian debit cards is available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debit_card

My Neteller card (USA) didn't work in Australia.

Is the Australia Network owned/operated by the Australian government? If so, why are half the shows ****ty soaps?

i'm pretty sure the Australia Network is not an Australian Government thing.

www.abc.net.au broadcasts some stuff into SE asia, but mostly radio.

Well they don't really have commercials other than for other AN shows and they have a bunch of shows dedicated to learning English (one of which is seriously creepy) and quite a few documentary/educational/news shows BUT lots of crappy soaps. Doesn't make sense.

They have ABC news and my all-time favorite moment was when they referred to CO2 as "a toxic gas." OMG Coca-Cola is marketing this poison to children!

i stand corrected - http://www.dfat.gov.au/aib/media.html indicates that the Australia Network is indeed an Australian government effort.

Never heard about a Neteller card not working, hehe.

My old Neteller card worked OK but then they stopped allowing it for Australian customers about a year ago or something i think (can't remember). However, now i have one of those new "First Pay" Neteller Mastercards and it works fine in any ATM.
