I'd love to move there and find work but I have no idea where to even start looking. I have an accounting degree and retail management experience. Any suggestions for an American looking for work down there?

I don't mean to be rude, but it seems the same questions keep being asked over and over.

The biggest job websites are:

www.mycareer.com.au
www.seek.com.au
www.careerone.com.au

Also, having an accounting qualification gets you additional points if you're looking to move permanently.

G'Day MJ and others.

So I've now planned my second trip down under- for Jan 2010. Aussie Millions and Aussie Open for me.

I'm not familiar with the beach prospects in and around Melbourne. The wife would probably like to spend several days sunning it somewhere, and I'm not opposed to driving or flying to get some good beach time in during the first or second week of January. We are also going to be taking our 8 year old and besides the philip island penguin parade, what are some good family type activities in and around Victoria???

cheers

ps- im sure its my shout about now....

Is it illegal to play poker and multi table while driving in Australia?

Phillip Island is a popular place with some families.

Other beaches near Melbourne include Sorrento/Portsea (south east) and then the beaches along Great Ocean Road (south west)

Other family type activities might include:
-Zoo
-Healesville Sanctuary (lots of Australian animal interactions, neighbouring town to the recent bushfires, so by Jan 2010, it'll be pretty remarkable how everything grows back)
-Sport
-Old Melbourne Gaol
-Trams

Maybe at the casino? If you find anything like that, let me know, 'cause I have a coin bowl that I probably have $x00 in coins that I'd like to cash in.

Yes, I think so. The crimes of Dangerous Driving and Reckless Driving typically include time in prison.

Come to New South Wales , we have these things called poker machines. In fact, we have more of them than anywhere else in the world (even Vegas) They will be happy to eat up all of your change for you!

that requires counting them, though. if you do that, then you may as well cash them in at a bank and get full value.

obv i'd be happy to take 7% vig for nothing, but it seems like a crap option for you.

I would have thought Victoria had more per capita than NSW, but I can't find any official figures. Either way, we both have A LOT.

I'm seriously considering moving to Sydney to study at the University of Sydney. Either for the the commerce degree or economics.
I've already been in contact with an agent here in Sweden and they say you need pretty good grades to get in and that they are fairly tough when it comes to including credits from schools in Europe.
I'm 23 years old, I've done 3 semesters effectively back home in two different well respected universities (goddamn poker!) and I definitely haven't excelled in terms of grades/dedication. Pretty decent grades from high school, but not amazing by any means.

I was just wondering if anyone here has any experience when it comes to this particular school and if there's anything I can do to improve my chances when filling out my application?

I have been asking similar questions in this thread before, but this time it's more concrete and I'm ready to go for it next semester.
How do the different schools in Sydney compare to each other? I know someone talked about the University of NSW and the agent recommended applying for UTS (technical school?!) if I didn't get in to my top pick.

When it comes to the Gold Coast - I've heard Bond is supposed to be really good, but what is the surrounding area like? Is it like in a city or just outside Surfer's Paradise or something? How about Griffith?

I'm not just going to Australia just for the weather/ppl etc. I want a really good education if I'm spending a lot of money and I really liked Sydney when spending 2 months there october-december last year. Melbourne not so much.

Really appreciate all the help I can get. Cheers.

I go to University of Sydney and it's pretty awesome here. I don't do an economics degree but I've got a couple of friends who are doing one and they seem to be enjoying themselves. UTS = University of Technology Sydney, it's a legit university and is pretty good from what I've heard. I have friends at University of NSW as well and they seem to like it. Sorry but I don't know too much about bettering your chances on getting in but gl!

If you can prove to the person determining your application that you're "special" then that has got to be valuable.

All the top universities in Australia are part of the group of 8 - http://www.go8.edu.au/

In Sydney, the "prestige/quality" rankings of unis would be:

Sydney
UNSW (where I've just commenced a postgraduate course in Ethics)
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
Macquarie
...
...
...
...
...
UTS
UWS
anything else

Again, the top unis are listed at http://www.go8.edu.au/

There may be some particular courses in certain other unis that are unusually high quality, but the institution isn't as highly regarded. Obv. the detail of the different courses is beyond my knowledge, but some googling should help you.

Commerce/Economics is not going to be something odd.

If you want a really good education, go to http://www.go8.edu.au/ and pick one. Any of those will be very high quality - you can compare international comparisons relatively easily through the various listings of best universities in the world.

I'm in my final year at the University of Sydney doing a Bachelor of Commerce. I highly recommend it!

The University of Sydney, UNSW and the University of Wollongong are all excellent places to study business (commerce) in my opinion. Degrees from these institutions are highly regarded by employers after you graduate.

I know that at USYD, the Faculty of Economics & Business values teamwork a lot. In almost every subject i have studied at uni, we have had to do assignments in groups "to prepare us for the business world when we graduate". If you have experience working as part of a team, that might be something that could give you an advantage in your application.

If you have any specific questions about the university campus, specific subjects, majors etc just ask

Unfortunately I don't have too much experience working in groups. Had a couple of group assignments in my first semester, but that's about it.

About the campus - if I actually did get in - where would you recommend living? I know some ppl say you should live on campus the first 6 months/year? Are there different campuses I could chose from if studying for the Bachelor of Commerce?

This is pretty much what I thought, ranking wise. I'm definitely not moving to Sydney to go to UTS or probably even MQ. I'm just gonna have to get in to USYD or UNSW. But how do I do this? How do I prove I'm special?
Although I've gone to two top 4 schools in Sweden, my resume is really choppy. I moved to a genuine university town and completed one year there before I really got into poker and started making money. Since then I've had a 1.5 yrs break and am now on my second semester here in my hometown, studying individual courses.
I've made a decent amount of money to set me up for a good future etc, but I'm guessing I definitely shouldn't mention anything about poker. So what do I write to improve my chances, if anything?

Australian Universities typically don't have an interview process like US universities except for specialised courses like Medicine.

You will be accepted based on your High School and previous University grades. Most Australian universities will allow you to sit an IQ-type test for certain courses (usually those without any prerequisite high school subjects) to gain entry.]

The entry requirements for courses like Business are not very stringent at all. The only courses you would need excellent grades to gain entry to are Law, Medicine, Veterinary Science or Architecture.

I'm planning on playing in the 'poker industry' one and possibly a few other events. I'm not allowed to play in the main event
