I have a sneaking suspicion my press form sucks, hence why my 5rm has only gone up 15 lbs in the past 4 months.
09-01-2010 , 01:42 PM
Brag about your press going up though.

[x] Find a place to live in CHI

September Goals:

With my gym reopening today (after 3 weeks off) there's a bunch I'd like to accomplish this month. But ultimately if I can squat 300x5 and bench 205x5 and keep weight at 160 then no matter what else happens, September will be a success.

thanks for the tip. I already foam roll and get massages regularly but I probably don't do either enough. I'll definitely check out MM and A&C asap.

No, it's not-so-crazy Paul, who is on a very strict diet under a doctor's supervision for medical reasons (he had just been to the doctor right before the challenge began, and thought he might as well enter the contest as long as he has to lose weight anyway). He's up to 19% body weight loss after 10 weeks, while I'm just over 12% loss. Mike is just over 8%.
09-01-2010 , 03:19 PM

Didn't fix my squat last month, but went to the gym for the first time in a WHILE today. Looking forward to DOMS, a new job and a new apartment.
09-01-2010 , 05:38 PM
So I'm gonna try something a little new this month and base my work outs around the standard barbell exercises of BP/Squat/DL/Press/Row and work up to a heavy(ish) set of 5 then back off and do "hypertrophy" stuff after in like the 8-15 rep range. I think that's kinda like 5-3-1 so perhaps I should read more about that program.
09-01-2010 , 05:40 PM
i didn't make my goal of push pressing a 40kg cattleball 24 times with each arm, i got 20R and 18L, will keep at it. goal also to press double 36kg's x 10 reps, can do 5 at the moment. i'm on a slight deficit as well.

JF and HS,

You should seriously consider just taking in one big breath before getting under the bar and then just bang out the 5 reps and rack the weight before exhaling. It drastically cuts down the time under the bar imo, which makes the completion of the actual 5 lifts easier. You'll get a bit dizzy afterwards, but you won't have to inhale while under load, which is a bitch regardless if you do it at the top or bottom.
09-01-2010 , 08:06 PM
I don't really have a problem breathing, but I could probably do like 3x breathe 2x rack

I did this today and I do think it makes the set easier. With bouncing, of course.

Goals:
Stop being a little bitch and go to the gym.
WIM.
Start taking some goddamn melatonin and get my sleep schedule back to something remotely normal.

Just got told I am NOT travelling this month after all so no excuses. And this week is restaurant week so I'm really going to need some gym time to make up for it.
09-01-2010 , 10:04 PM
Get better at Box Squats.

Get down to 160.

I won't be attempting any PRs this month, so my goals are just to maintain/build strength while eating at a slight deficit.

Oh, 2-3 hours of SS cardio/week.
09-01-2010 , 10:23 PM
Goals:

Learn how to squat/deadlift
300 lbs benchpress?
Continue to ignore weight/body composition

What's a good sport that's starting up this time of year for me to join. All I can think of is Football, Hockey, Basketball, and Volleyball, and I don't wanna play any of those for various reasons. Any suggestions?

Indoor would be better than outdoor.

- LOLtastic that I expected to do SS + basketball.
- Gained 3 pounds, satisfied with that. Just got to GOMAD, was at ~3/4 until last week.
- Went to Chi-town for a week for work and that set me back one full week, when I got back I had to reset on OHP and BP and fall behind on Squat/DL.
- Regardless, really happy with Squat and DL progress. (I didn't make a goal for DL but started at 85, I did 165 today... had to re-read the SS chapter when I was at 135 to check technique... today my shins were bleeding haha).

September:

Bodyweight --> Gain 5lbs
OHP 65 --> 90 lbs
Bench Press 100 --> 130lbs
Squat 140 --> 200lbs
Deadlift 165 --> 200lbs*

* (Not too big of a goal b/c I've been doing DL 3x a week I'll be doing 1x a week starting next week)

edit: Can someone explain the clips that people get to be able to load 2.5lbs instead of 5? I'm going to need it for OHP pretty soon.
09-02-2010 , 01:02 AM
you can just use a single 2.5lb plate and shift your grip toward the heavier side a tiny bit.
