skel,

I went to the recent local Ren Fair here in CO. They had the same cheesecake on a stick! It might even be the same outfit you saw in CA. They travel from state to state.

Snickerdoodles is such a great name I feel sad I've never tried one. Now I want fresh baked biscuits!

Quite possibly the same outfit. I know when we talked to some of the people there they said they traveled all around.

I'm kind of glad it was a M******* doing that! Wonder what "yoga type pose" he was doing. Feel slightly bad for the officers who had to deal with a naked dude like that though.

Noobs.

Wisconsin State Fair - foods on a stick, often deep fried

Hello H&F Peeps!

I've been trying to do a pull up for at least 6 months...been working on it at the gym. Started just hanging there, increased my hang time, and now I can pull up maybe 40% to a complete pull up.

However!

Last night I bought one of those bar things that you attach to your doorway to do pull ups at home. It works great, but I think I did too much. My left arm is sore, has a bruise on the inner elbow like I broke a vein.

Is this anything to worry about? Can I keep working on it or am I hurting something?

I made a new friend at the gym.

I couldn't quite place his accent, so I asked, "Aussie or kiwi?"

Which in hindsight is insulting enough.

But after an awkward silence, he finally said, "London."

Thank Christ for my facial scars. They're probably the only thing that made him hesitate to kick my ass.

Josie,

You're probably fine to keep going. And welcome back!

Josie,

I am not going to pretend I can diagnose anything like what you are describing, but I can tell you that it is not difficult to overdo pull-ups specifically, and not difficult to come in too hot on any movement as a beginner. Your connective tissue is often the weak link when you start getting stronger because it may not respond as quickly to the sudden activity as muscle. It also may not warn you the way your muscles will by being sore while they repair/recover.

Again, don’t know what to say about the bruise but in general you should listen to your body and allow ample recovery.

ETA or what monte said. =)

If it hurts to do it, rest it until it doesn't. At least initially.

Hey there Josie!

I get these. Lately from the heavy pullups but previously from rock climbing. They're called vein adjacent generalized ischemic neuropathic arterial lesions with pre-adaptive inert nodes, or "vaginal pain" for short. They told me whenever I get a vaginal pain, to try to give the whole area a rest and possibly put some ice on it. After 48 hours it's ok to apply some heat, like possibly steam, but wait at least 72 hours before massaging. Let me know how your vaginal pain progresses.

Should have followed up with "huh, I know a couple of arseholes just like you and they come from down under, thought you might be the same" then stared at him to make friends for life

Ah, thanks everyone! I didn't touch the bar yesterday, and yeah it def looked like a vein burst, small round deep bruise.

I am going back at it today now that I have a bar at home.

Josie, I found this video very helpful. You might like it too, especially the progression part which starts around minute 5.

attn powerlifting bros:

My gym bro is entering a novice push/pull comp 18 August (three weeks from now). He says he has competed in powerlifting before, but like 30 years ago (he's like 50 now).

He's a strength sport enthusiast (loves his WSM and follows a bit of powerlifting), so he at least basically understands the concept of a powerlifting meet.

He currently does all three lifts, three times a week, plus accessories on other days (just loves being in the gym, has trained all his life). He mostly just does his faives on the big three and then varies weight and number of sets and sometimes reps to do a light/medium/heavy day of each.

I've been telling him he should at least mix some pause bench singles in to get used to paused.

So... question is, if you were in this situation, what would you do over the next three weeks to get used to paused bench?

Also, any other quick tips for a first timer? Picking attempts? Etc? He's not really interested in "peaking" (and I think that's fair enough) or anything. I think the week before the meet his schedule is going to have him doing something like 5x180kg dead and 5x105kg bench (which I think he should hit reasonably comfortably. He did a 5x5x100kg bench this week, and I think a 10x155kg dead).

Do people really still do cheat n go bench? Pause all bench reps until the competition.
