LOL Globogym salespeople. I just moved to a new city and have been shopping for a gym in what little free time I have. The closest gym to my house is an LA Fitness which I checked out a few weeks ago. I thought it was decent but with a big Globogym vibe so I decided to keep looking. Turns out that other decent gyms are much less conveniently located, and this LA Fitness has a pool. Since my new job has been curb stomping my time, I stopped back in to the LA Fitness and asked to join.
The salesperson proceeded to spend at least 15 minutes pressuring me to pay over $1k up front for a 3 year membership ($1078 IIRC). Who the hell in their right mind would pay that much to lock in a 3 year gym membership? I insta-declined it and kept pointing at one of the other options on the sales guy's worksheet and saying "I'll take that one," all while the guy was writing out all manner of goofy math on a tablet and trying to convince me that I would save money by paying $1k+ right then. His bibbly babbly nonsense deal included something about a $19 per month for life membership after the three years is up, but who the hell would pay $1k+ today to secure a deal on a gym membership three years from now? Geez.
Had I not already experienced the bad morning and rush hour traffic between my job/house/other gyms, I would have walked out right then. A salesperson has to make a living, but it shouldn't take 15 minutes of me repeatedly pointing at the option that I want for the sales guy to realize that I'm not going to bite on the crap deal.
Also LOL me for not even thinking about signing up online. WTF was I thinking? I went to their website and discovered to my chagrin that signing up online offered a better deal for less money out of pocket up front than the deal I signed in person. I'm definitely going to go ask for the better rate either tomorrow or Monday, but I'm partly to blame for that for not having checked out the pricing online first. Gah.
