there are two dudes, an asian and a black guy, I see in my gym a lot, mostly doing OK stuff but fairly poorly and random (lack of depth on squats, obv). Both don't look any good nor seem very strong. Anyway, they come back to where I'm working out looking like they're looking for something but not saying anything.

Asian dude grabs the straps on the reverse hyper and asks his buddy, "is this it?"

"nah that ain't it." They still look around and he's still diddling with the reverse hyper. So I tell him, "that's a reverse hyper dude."

"Oh, you know where the forearm thing is? Some guy told us it was back here"

I was so perplexed. Finally I realized they were talking about this little grip machine and pointed it out to him. lol.

Then they gawked at my l33t squats.

I had a Ronnie Coleman love in at my gym the other day.

I worked in with a few randoms squatting and one guy said to the other something about Ronnie Coleman. This lead to an avalanche of Yeah buddies! Ain't nuthin! and several other quotes and much talk about whether he squats the weight on the bar or he pushes the earth away from him. Good laugh.

I've been working out at a gym in phuket thailand this week. Between the tourist and expat euros and the occasional epic small locals, massive lulz are being shipped.

-- french guy doing 1/8th squats with 60kg and has the pins set so high he has to almost jump to rack and unrack the bar

-- thai dude trying to stand the opposite way around on the hack squat

-- occasional roided (cuz they are bigger than me obv) out 35 y/o soccer hooligans maxing out the leg extension machines and then staring me down as i squat

-- smattering of guys with no interest in the lone squat rack until they see me using it for > 10 min but obv have no desire to work in

-- lateral arm raises seem to actually be at least 3x as popular as curls

This list is actually a little bit weak but coming from a 100% hardcore oly gym in the states it's a massive culture shock. I pity the scandis and brits on here that have to work out in this environment.

Very true, for quite a few different reasons.

That's just girls from Isaan (northern region of thailand).

Trouble is, almost all the ho's are from Isaan and 95% of girls you meet when partying in the more touristy places are ho's.

I'm in Puket as well. Patong at the moment, but moving soon to my own place in either Kata or Kamala. What's your situation and where do you work out?

Doing squats in the power rack with gym buddy (squat rack was taken, gym was not busy at all).

Some dude comes in, doesn't say a word, just starts doing chin-ups in between the two of us as we're putting weights on the bar between sets.

Standard? ******ed? I've witnessed this more than once.

did you say something? that guy would get his ass beat if he did that in MY gym.

but really, that guy clearly is the alpha male if he did that, so you guys were right to just let him finish his set before continuing.

Ahahahaha. My buddy says this kinda stuff all the time. Needs more love.

Yesterday I saw an old guy take a exercise ball and put it between his back and the wall. He had really old school head phones on and a toothpick in his mouth. He just stood there and bobbed his knees with a little lateral in his hips movement for a long time. I have a feeling it started out as something a PT told him to do and evolved into that.

About a year ago some idiot decided he was gonna jump in and do fatman pullups on the bar I had racked in the power rack probably to do hang cleans. He also just did so without asking. I stand over him almost tea bagging him through my washed once a year gym shorts and let one rip. He of course quickly let go of the bar and sort of crawled out apologizing. Was pretty funny as I did this with a straight face and know a few other people saw it but no one laughed or said anything.

If I had not had the pent up flatulence I would have probably just yanked the bar off one side giving him a bit of a scare.

Saw a guy reach failure mid bench press without a spotter today. Surprised at how easy it was was to free himself without a big scene. I went to go over when i saw he was struggling then saw he had it more than covered and left it. I always imagined i'd croak out a "help" with the bar on my windpipe but he just kinda rolled the bar down his chest and sat up very casual like no big thing. Wasn't a big weight, but still.

This has happened to me more than once during incline bench, as long as you don't panic you're fine. The you get to power clean the weight back up and put it on the rack, which unfortunately speaks more to how weak my incline bench is than how strong my PC's are.

I just don't put collars on, it's easy to get the weight off.

I have to now, because I used wax paper on the spindles to make it easier to put plates on. There was a lot of rust on the bar, so I figured waxing it would alleviate the problems. Of course the first time I went to squat, the plates fell off one side and smashed my $10 Wal-Mart lamp.

...and this is exactly why... So what happens if you are squatting and a plate or two falls off one side... Isn't that recipie for back injury? If it happens on a bench, aren't you giong to rip a shoulder off or something...

It takes ~zero effort to put a collar on... I just don't see why you wouldn;t...

my weights don't slide easily. i use collars on the press because i'm often using washers that clang around without collars, and i increment so slowly that i just keep them on even when i have only normal plates on the bar to not mess up my tiny increments.

if you need collars when you squat, you're most likely already ruining your back.
