He seems to do some kind of 4-5 day squat/press/bench/dead program with pullups and dips as assistance. Occasional bb curls and db upper body assistance. All legit stuff, but he does some wacky moderate intensity, high rep scheme. Lots of sets. Like Friday he was deadlifting 330lbs but for lots of sets/reps. I think his 1RM would be well over 400, but I never see him gonig heavy. Wotevs. He's big and probably way better at rugby than me.

Anyway, we acknowledge each other because we're always on the squat racks together and I think respect that we both don't do ******ed lifts. Just the usual "How you doin? What are you doing today?" etc.

On Friday I was getting ready for a 1RM dead and he comes in and is like "how many sets you got to go?" and I'm like "This is my last one. It's a PR attempt. " and he's like cool and goes and does some warm up stuff. I got my lift (brag) and am unloading and he comes back and is like "Did you get it?" and I'm like "Yeah" and he's like "That awesome man! Great work!" and gives me a big handshake.

Lifters handshake - bros hifive imo.

I don't know why I'm telling this story.

Saw a guy wearing an Avg Broz shirt. He was doing the "circuit" on the machines.

Guy came in to workout in jeans and hoodie. Walked by me and chalked up, to do incline dumbbell bench. Proceeded to get a "spot" from the front desk guy. He looked at me doing my warmup squats before he went to the front desk guy. Glad he came to the realization that I wouldn't be a good candidate to help his reps. After his set he took off his hoodie to reveal a sweet t with the sleeves cutoff. Made me realize that my choice of lifting with headphones on away from the dumbbells is a good one.

walk into my gym just now, 2 guys standing next to a rack with 545 on the bar. obviously this gets me interested, never seen anyone squat this. the guy nearly blows his o ring unracking it and just stands there. they do like 5 sets of standing there with weight on their back. any point?

5 sets, but how many reps of 'stand there' per set?

I think some people say that just unracking a heavy weight can improve their CNS efficiency and make their work sets feel lighter. No idea if it works or not, but it makes some sense, I know when I press after front squatting, the weight feels a lot lighter than if I just worked up to my work set. Who knows if actually helps improve the amount I can lift

chad waterbury used to talk about doing supramaximal holds...holding a weight you couldn't do a full rep with and doing a very tiny ROM, just to get used to holding the weight and getting your body used to it...

For a while I was doing supramaximal holds before squats, putting like 245 on the bar for say a 195 workset. That's like one brief hold as an additional warmup though, not doing multiple sets or anything. It definitely makes you not really notice the bar on your back when you actually squat, can't say how it affects overall performance though.

Lyle has a section near the bottom talking about it:

yeah, it's legit, though probably overstated. 5 sets is overkill.

aidan,

Obv hard to do, but the l33t play there is just to say "sweet stack, bro" and go about your business.

Was very out of breath playing soccer after going to the gym for an hour. Cardio related to weight lifting or was it more likely something else?

Your more tired when playing after going to the gym? Really?

Possibly. Could be other factors, different soccer than i'm used to because of the smaller gym, and i did go out drinking on the weekend.

Working out for beach muscles seems pretty dumb when you live in Alaska. That's useful like what, 1 week a year?
