They hit a bunch of different muscle groups. In one you're pulling yourself vertically and one you're pulling yourself horizontally (directions are assuming you're standing up).

Nah they're basically the same. I think you are confusing fat man pull ups with assisted pull ups.

Oh, I assumed a fat man pullup was when you loaded up the assisted machine with like 150lbs of plates

Not a gym observation, but I thought this was amusing after my own horrific belligerent old guy experience. From www.70sbig.com (now one of my new favorite sites):

"Hey Justin,

I’ve been following the linear progression for about 2-3 months, and working on doing things right like in Mark Rippetoe’s book. I train at a “fitness gym” (because they have child care, but I hate the place). I’m 180lbs and 5’9″, not naturally strong. I am at 250 on squat (started around 200), 280 on dead lift (working on 300), and 130 on press ( started at 115). I’m not the strongest guy but I’m working on it.

The other day I was going for a PR on deadlift and this guy yelled at me from across the room and tossed a 45 lbs weight at me. He went on and on about how he much he used to lift and that my weight was “chicken ****”. All this while he was doing leg presses. He told me I was an insult to people like him, tearing up his gym, and making too much noise. This is a guy who does curls inside the squat rack.

A few days later I was looking in my notebook to see what my work set was going to be he yells at me across the gym, “Hey you need me to sign off on that? Holy **** that’s a lot of weight. Man, you might need a spot!” This is while he and his friend were doing press with the smith machine by the way. All this has really discouraged me lately, because picking a fight would cost me my career in law enforcement. There is not a whole lot I can do but keep getting stronger.

I tell you all this to say that it was really hard to ball my fist around a barbell and lift when I wanted to just walk out. I just wanted to thank you for making this website. I know a lot of posts are funny, but a lot of the posts put some fire in my ass to go lift in spite of idiots like him. So thanks, it really helps a lot. OK, I’m gonna go drink some milk.

–Russell"

I bet ANYTHING that the dude bitching him out was over 40. Deadlifting seems to really piss off old dudes.

I have no idea how Russell didn't yell back. I can't imagine ever taking that type of bull****. Must be one of the worst gym stories itt.

must be something about being 6'2" with a shaved head and a mean look on my face that stops people from saying **** like this to me. i always hear about stuff like this but unfortunately it never happens to me

I too have some vibe that makes people not want to mess with me. ::Shrug::

And wtf at throwing a 45 at him? That's lololol. I might have said something if I wasn't even involved.

Saw my boss working out yesterday morning. He's not a big lifter, but what he was doing made me feel both sad and angry.

1/4 squats with an empty bar and the pussy pad. I waited until we were having lunch with the owner of our company before I called him out on it. The owner laughed when I told my boss if I ever see him squat like that again, I'll kick his ass. I don't think I'll be employed much longer.

Old guys hate people who deadlift. They leg press with 1/8inch rom like 2k lbs, 1/16th squat 3 plates and grunt at 50 decibles, and wear extremely 2 inch shorts with their grey haired balls sticking out and they hate it when you deadlift because it might steal some of their attention away : ( : ( : ( They're not at the gym to work out, they're there to display their aging and grotesque gonads and there better not be anything more interesting to watch in THEIR gym damnit!

I've got a serious question. Is it everybody's opinion that pretty much any amount of deadlifting/powercleaning with these http://www.buyfitness4less.com/images/OlympicPlates.jpg rather than these http://www.pro-fitness.com/photos/Ru...pic_Plates.jpg is acceptable regardless of the gym's set up and how much noise is being made?

If bumper plates are available then using metal plates to do DL/PC is (correctly) frowned upon.

Always clean and snatch with bumpers so you can properly drop the weight after each rep. Deadlift I'm not totally sure, I've always used normal plates even when I'm at a gym with bumpers but I'm pretty sure I'm wrong.

That makes sense.

What if bumper plates are not available? I don't think deadlifts are a big deal regardless. I'm asking b/c someone was at my gym a few days ago doing powercleans with plates and smashing the bar down after every rep. Though I don't do them, I'm in no way anti Olympic lifts, but this seemed ridiculous to me. It was unbelievably noisy and disruptive (in part due to the accoustics of the room I'm sure) and I'm really not sensitive to that sort of thing. Just wondering what the general take on it is.

IMHO if you can't even jump rope for 10 mins.. you prolly shouldn't have a gym membership

Using metal plates for power cleaning sounds very disrespectful both to your fellow gym-goers and the equipment/gym. Ok for DLs ldo.
